The days of ‘unwavering support’ for Israel are over | The Marc Steiner Show

“The shift in US public opinion toward Palestine and Israel has been dramatic over the last decade, especially transformative in the last few years,” Phyllis Bennis recently wrote in The Nation. “US polls have been shifting since the mid-2000s, away from the uncritical embrace of Israel and toward a view much more critical of Tel Aviv and in favor of Palestinian rights.” It has taken generations of struggle and countless instances of Israeli settler-colonial violence against Palestinians for Americans to finally question their government’s unwavering and virtually unconditional support of Israel. As attitudes towards Israel and its apartheid regime continue to change, and as more constituents demand accountability and action from their elected officials, when will that translate to substantive changes in US foreign policy? Phyllis Bennis returns to The Marc Steiner Show to discuss her recent article and what this sea change in public opinion could mean for Israel, for Palestinians, and for the US political landscape.

Phyllis Bennis is a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC, where she also serves as director of the New Internationalism Project. She is a founding member of the US Campaign to End Israeli Occupation and serves on the national board of Jewish Voice for Peace. She is the author of numerous books, including Before & After: US Foreign Policy and the War on Terrorism.

  1. We would have peacekeeping American leaders, if we American Descendant of Slavery were the measure, barometer, and vanguards of socioeconomic injustice and choices of leadership. ALL POLITICS MUST COME FROM THE POINT OF INTEREST OF THE MOST DISPOSSESSED GROUP.

  2. A very necessary discussion with some important points raised. I just hope this isn’t merely performative and she’s a ’real” one – not just controlled opposition. It would have been helpful to define what a semite and a ‘jew’ actually are. As I’m sure the biggest proponents of antisemitism, ironically, are the very Israelis carrying out apartheid persecution of their Arab hosts. I won’t bother discussing Iraq, Syria and other non-western compliant governments and their populations. Anti semitism doesn’t just refer to people of the jewish faith.

  3. Jews who aligned themselves with the occupation of Palestine and the atrocities that accompanied it must steel themselves In years to come they will be hauled before the courts or it's equivalent and be forced to give an account of this very dark part of its history.

  4. This is what I needed to hear. After what happened in Jenin. I was so angry. I am glad to see loving Jews who are humanitarian and feel similar to me. This is the messianic age and the Messiah approves of Phyllis Bennis and Marc Steiner.

  5. BLM Movement…. people have knowledge, built on an foundation of lies. Once you separate The Jew from the Jewish, then will you begin to understand the truth.

  6. Moshe Menuhin’s book Neither might nor power warned us about Israel in 1965. Netanyahu is the only politically honest PM because he lifted the veil off the true nature of Zionism. There’s never been a shift to the far right. To paraphrase Gideon Levy “Thank God the hypocrisy is over”.

  7. Can you tell me please why is it that the DNA found in the so called afro american raped decendents of slaves happen to be from jews that can be proven.????
