The parents of confessed school shooter Ethan Crumbley appeared in court Tuesday to continue fighting charges against them in connection to the Oxford high school massacre. James and Jennifer Crumbley were charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter after their son murdered four students and injured seven others in Michigan in November 2021. “There were warning signs,” the judge said to attorneys representing the parents, who claim they had no idea their son would shoot up a school. The Law&Crime Daily team has the latest on this case.

46 thoughts on “‘Warning Signs’: Parents of Oxford School Shooter Fight Manslaughter Charges

  1. They need to be held accountable if the law isnt going to make it harder for people to get guns or give guns to children like this who create mass shootings. Point blank. Its isnt just gun manufacturers its the parents that are the problem. Who in their right mind give a child a gun even if they like them are fascinated by them want them as a hobby when there are MODLE GUNS THAT CANT HURT PEOPLE. It’s negligence at its finest folks.

  2. Their child had mental issues they knew that they totally ignored it Bonnie mcgunn I think they should be held accountable for their actions I totally agree with a judge

  3. I don't think you get to charge an adult with any crime for their chosen action and also blame someone else for that same action. This doesn't mean the parents are saints; they don't need to be saints for the above principle to be true. Adults are responsible for choosing their actions. The presence or absence of another's influence is not a deciding factor in an adult's choices.

  4. Knives are used all the time to commit crimes, including murder. So are cars and hammers and etc… shall we lock up any parents who's child murders someone with their parent's hammer?

  5. The school said about the kid having a gun, “it is a fine hobby, just don’t bring it to school?”
    Are you ****ing kidding me?

“There’s nothing illegal about parents getting their child a gun???”

    What is this insanity???

  6. ANY parent that gives their troubled kid a gun and that gun is then used to murder innocent people.. they should abso-frick'n-lutely be charged. Mentally ill individuals shouldn't have access to guns.. this child was clearly going through some things.. his parent's either ignored, disregard or just didn't care..I don't just blame Ethan. I blame the parent's.. they failed him. If they wouldve just taken 10 minutes to talk to their son, maybe give him a hug and get him some much needed help.. This might've been avoided.. the fact that they did nothing.. angers me..

  7. Ill-equipped parents with no prior experience with mental health issues should have known to checked the backpack but not the trained mental health school counselor shouldn't. The trained school staff should have not allowed the student to stay in school. We as parents trust the school staff with our children safety, shouldn't they be liable seeing as he was in the school's custody at the time of the shooting? If one be held accountable then ALL should be held accountable.

  8. There where so many signs of a troubled child for almost a year!, His best friend moved away because they didn’t want there child to be involved!

  9. I agree 100% with binding the parents over for trial. They're as guilty, if not more guilty, as their son. There were CLEAR signs of mental deterioration in their son. EC was SO DESPERATE for mental health evaluation and treatment, that he pathetically wanted to call 9-1-1 on himself, so he could be taken to a hospital. For fear of his parents' anger, he didn't make the call. THEN THEY BOUGHT HIM A GUN, which is illegal. Let them be tried. I can't wait.

  10. Before the parents bought the gun we’re there any red flags 🚩? Why wasn’t the gun locked up somewhere he couldn’t get to it? I understand it’s his gun for shooting practice or whatever.

  11. I hope more parents are also held accountable for their child's murder. It might make parents be more proactive with parenting and help prevent this from happening.

  12. "No crime to get a gun for your kid", "nice hobby" – are Americans really surprised they repeatadly get their children shot to pieces at school?

  13. These parents never thought about his mental health as their son begged them for help. He was hearing voices, so instead, they continued to ignore him. Then they bought him a gun as he drew violent pics. Parents deserve to be charged

  14. Since the beginning, I've said the school is just as culpable as the parents. A public school has a right to mandate actions such as detainment, evaluation, and suspension.

  15. I actually do think this could have nasty implications, but that judge is amazzzziiiiinnnnnggg at asking good questions.

  16. So SORRY to these Victims and Their Families 💔💔💔💔💔💔😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

  17. 💔💔💔💔💔💔 PLEASE don't leave the US too much bad things happening PLEASE STAY HOME!🙏🙏🏼🙏🏾🙏🏿🌈

  18. PLEASE PLEASE 🙏🙏🏼🙏🏾🙏🏿 JUDGES PLEASE give these Victims and their Family JUSTICE. No child should have a Gun ESPECIALLY a Child with MENTAL ILLNESS.

  19. This is so sad. I live only 30 minutes away from Oxford and the day this happened, i broke down into tears. Knowing my friends from there were in that building. And me not not knowing if they were alive or not just breaks me.

  20. Many parents, myself included, are/were just completely undermined and without any authority, control or rights to discipline their children. I raised 5 daughters, very close in age, all born within 6 years. One has serious behavioral issues. I could not control her by "normal" or recommended methods. Including years and years of therapy, individually, she and I, entire family. Parenting classes, training with Love and Logic Parenting… I did all the things. Court, CPS involvement completely destroyed any hope I had to getting the desired behaviors out of my daughter. Keep in mind she's 1 of 5, all raised the exact same way. The others did not have these problems. There were numerous times that my daughter would have benefited from a belt to her bottom, because punishment nor positive reinforcement phased her. Thank God she's an adult now and doing well. She is a kind hearted person and always has been. Her behavior never matched her personality. She was a mystery to me. I was held responsible for her behavior even though I did everything I could think of to correct her, evening begging the courts for help, only to be told that until she broke the law, there was nothing I could do. As if running away, refusing to obey your parents and teachers (unruly conduct) isnt against the law. It's a miracle no one every got hurt seriously and im thankful she wasn't a violent person (though she would defend herself). If she has more violent tendencies, she very easily could have done something like this and I would have been blamed, despite doing everything humanly possible to help her.

  21. ❤ PARENTS OF THE YEAR❤
Gave their son a Nice Christmas Gift: A GUN !!
Then they tried to flee to Canada !!
    ❤❤THAT IS REAL LOVE ❤❤

  22. Maybe it’s time to start holding parents accountable for situations involving minors with guns. Parents need to start being more responsible about locking up their guns and preventing situations like this from being able to happen. I don’t think these parents should be made an example of in order for a new law or regulation to be made. It’s bad enough that several factors were over looked, their lives are ruined, they are already behind bars, and they have to live with the fact that their son is a murder. That’s a hard pill to swallow for going about your normal daily routine and brushing things off as a lot of parents tend to do.

  23. The judge was right. The school officials should be tried too.
Give Perez v. Sturgis the parents should sue the district. The school officials would either shutup or get charged also to compel them to speak.
