VERDICT WATCH: TX v. Aaron Dean Trial – Death of Atatiana Jefferson – Day 6

A former police officer stands trial for shooting and killing a black woman in her mother’s home back in October 2019. The question before jurors is whether defendant Aaron Dean‘s actions constituted murder. Authorities said victim Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was at her mother’s home playing video games with her nephew when Dean, then an officer with the Fort Worth Police Department, performed a botched welfare check.

James Smith, who was neighbors with the homeowner Yolanda Carr, told the BBC in a 2020 report that he called police to perform a welfare check after his niece and nephew saw that the lights of her home were on and the front door was open on the early morning of Oct. 12, 2019. He thought that it was strange that Carr’s lawnmower and gardening equipment were plugged in. This was not an emergency call. Smith said he expected an officer to just knock on the door and see if his neighbor was fine. He did not know that Carr was in the hospital for her heart condition. Instead, Carr’s 8-year-old grandson and daughter Atatiana were up playing video games.

  1. Just twist the facts how you want defense- we all saw the video. Also, Zion had a very different vantage point then his aunt. She had a flashlight in her face, and by the time he said show me your hands at what point was she supposed to comply? Within the .05 seconds he said it 🙄

  2. What would happen if she had a remote in her hand. She could have had anything in her hands. The cop shot before announcing who he was. It is known fact that a COP has to announce they are police. Even SWAT knows that they announce who is coming through that door. As far has as recognizing that it was officer the defense lawyer said that it was dark outside. Why would the neighbors come check and ask who was inside the house. He is not a cop.

  3. The psychologist who conducted the pre-employment test on this cop in 2017 said at that time that he was unfit to be a police officer. Had a very high opinion of himself, felt entitled, was flippant, said he had no flaws and was arrogant. Said he could fly planes because he had played with flight simulators as a kid. Also said he could teach advanced calculus. He was impatient and had assaulted a young lady and had had had a few run-ins with the law a couple of times. Not only did he violate Fort Worth Police Department policy on this call but had violated policies in the past. So the police Chief said that he was going to fire him. Right? But he decided to quit the job. I bet a lot of the rambo cops have been declared unfit to serve as police officers, yet they are hired and kill people at will.

  4. Make it make sense to me he said he told her to hold her hands up let me see your hands now if that was the case how in the world was she pointing a gun at him and if she was putting a gun at him why didn't he say drop the weapon no what he said was put your hands up let me see your hands which tells us she was not pointing a gun at him, now just make this make sense to me because from his point of view it just does not

  5. Law and crime is getting so they do a horrible job with the volume on their microphones it's time to turn the volume up so you can even hear the attorney and not just the judges instructions to the jury

  6. This mane ain't had a verdict yet???? I been waiting since 12:00 eastern time 🤦🏾‍♂️😭😭😭😖😭😭😭

  7. In the video footage slow the youtube video footage to the slowest speed at time stamp 1:36 you see she has a torch in her right hand and her left hand is to her side. He saw a TORCH !!!!!! HE SHOT AT A TORCH !!!!

  8. the body cam video footage shows her standing with her hands to her side, just as zion said her hands were to her side.

I can have a badge a fake one, and go up to someone's house and just start yelling put your hands up . doesnt mean you have a badge you are a cop, and just because the child saw a badge, the woman probably didnt see it , all she did was get blinded by the flash light, yelled at to put her hands up by a random person hiding in the backayrd

  9. Straight up negligence or was he looking for his first opportunity to shoot someone..? If found guilty, What is a fair jail term? Its not your typical murder case… I've seen a lot of murders first want to join the military or police probably to have an opportunity to shoot someone legally. But they usually have a red flag that keeps them from joining. Is this a case where one was able to join?

  10. Praying for justice for this family. So many things that were done wrong. Aaron did NOT have the right to shoot her and he didn't even render aid? He's been free for 3 years? The pain and trauma that he caused Zion and the rest of the family is not justified!
