VERDICT REACHED: TX v. Aaron Dean Trial – Death of Atatiana Jefferson – Day 7

VERDICT REACHED: TX v. Aaron Dean Trial – Death of Atatiana Jefferson – Day 7

A former police officer stands trial for shooting and killing a black woman in her mother’s home back in October 2019. The question before jurors is whether defendant Aaron Dean‘s actions constituted murder. Authorities said victim Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was at her mother’s home playing video games with her nephew when Dean, then an officer with the Fort Worth Police Department, performed a botched welfare check.

James Smith, who was neighbors with the homeowner Yolanda Carr, told the BBC in a 2020 report that he called police to perform a welfare check after his niece and nephew saw that the lights of her home were on and the front door was open on the early morning of Oct. 12, 2019. He thought that it was strange that Carr’s lawnmower and gardening equipment were plugged in. This was not an emergency call. Smith said he expected an officer to just knock on the door and see if his neighbor was fine. He did not know that Carr was in the hospital for her heart condition. Instead, Carr’s 8-year-old grandson and daughter Atatiana were up playing video games.

  1. 🖕🏾 the police and their 6 wks training course. Now wen the PUBLIC do their own justice dnt be mad and say. Blue lives matter.. they're not smerfs f tht uniform 🤷🏼‍♀️

  2. How many get off with literal murder? Lots. And everything in between. It's more than rotten apples.
    Qualified immunity+police unions = a doomed citizenry.

  3. He showed terrible judgment and then, based on the evidence, LIED about Atatiana and PERJURED HIMSELF on the stand! The green laser was NOT shining out of the window indicating that she was aiming the gun at his chest like he now says. There was NO shattered glass on her HANDS, as there was on her face once HIS bullet went through the window and shot her! He NEVER told his partner that Atatiana had a gun before they entered the house! When he found a gun, he just told his partner that it looks like we’ve got a weapon then gave a big sigh.

After 15 years on the street myself, I can tell you there are a dozen better ways he could have handled that call and put EVERYONE at less risk! With his lack of good sense and critical thinking in a dynamic situation, he eventually would’ve gotten himself, his partners, and/or civilians killed eventually. This is NOT acceptable and the public needs to demand that cops stop being coddled at the expense of the public.

HE DESERVES EVERY DAY OF 20 YEARS AND NOT A SECOND LESS!!! FWPD also needs to be held responsible for their poor policies and overly-forgiving training. And ALL OF US taxpayers need to demand they do a better job of protecting and serving instead of using public funds for trials and segments.

Justice for Atatiana, Zion, their loved ones, all 2A citizens, and civilian protectors with RIGHTS the police do not have the right to constantly violate!!! 🇺🇸⚖️🗽

  4. I feel TERRIBLE for Officer Dean. Unlike many of you who are happy to see a cop 'hang', I can see the terrible decision that he was faced with. What would YOU have done if YOU found yourself looking down the barrel of a gun with only a split second to decide whether or not to defend your life? For God's sake, he was TRAINED by the FWPD to meet "lethal force with lethal force" and, as he was basically fresh out of the Academy, it's obvious that the training that he received was still fresh for him. MAYBE a more 'seasoned' officer would have made a different decision but somehow I doubt it. THIS WAS NOT A JUST VERDICT.

  5. People saying manslaughter is a just verdict are basing their opinion off emotion and not the actual laws surrounding self-defense.
Sounds like the jury didn't think he was guilty, but wanted to "hold him accountable".
