Leading up to the murders of Alex Murdaugh’s wife and son in June 2021, another person with connections to the disgraced lawyer’s family died. Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old nursing student from South Carolina, was found dead on the side of a road in Hampton County in 2015. Although originally ruled a hit-and-run, SLED investigators reopened the cold-case investigation into Stephen’s death shortly after Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed. Investigators have not revealed whether Stephen’s death is connected to the Murdaugh murders but are aware that Smith and the Murdaugh brothers knew each other. Supporters have continued to seek justice for Stephen to this day. The Law&Crime Network’s Jesse Weber is joined by Susanne Andrews, the Founder of Standing for Stephen.

As the highway police clarified. And as ex fire dept, shoes do not stay on someone when they have been hit by a car. Even if the shoes were tied very tight. They always fly off. This was a staged murder 100%

Nothing in these cases feels right. Too much underhanded deceitful coverups going on. This family has too much money and prominence. Its hard to believe anything after all the lies that have been told. I hope the full truth comes out for the sake of the innocent ones.

It sure is taking a long time for SLED to release anything about this case since the second Stephan Smith autopsy…hopefully this doesn’t remain covered up…
80 years of murdaughs in South Carolina, if they are guilty, they aren’t going to charge anyone if it’s an in-state law enforcement agency doing this investigation

I hope Stephens family gets the closure and answers they deserve. And for the mardaughs shame on you for all the horrible things your family has done thinking your above the law No your scum and I hope you get everything that you deserve you may claim innocence but we all know the stories the boating accident, the au pair, Stephen smith, and lastly your own son and wife. I would ask where was he going,why was he on this road,who did he talk to on phone last,why was he walking wrong direction from gas station, who was he seeing at the time, Don't jump to conclusions because of hate of the murdough family

My thoughts are both murdaugh boys where involved in Stephens death but Paul was the abuser that early morning,hence why he turned into someone totally different when intoxicated,I feel Gloria may have over heard something about that death that she shouldn't have nd they felt she was a threat for that,I could be all wrong…
