Louisville, Kentucky — On Friday, May 20th, 2022, at approximately 8:30 a.m. the U.S. Marshals Task Force, comprised of Deputy U.S. Marshals and LMPD detectives, were in the 800 block South 37th Street attempting to serve outstanding arrest warrants for Assault 2nd Degree (domestic violence), Strangulation 1st Degree, Terroristic Threatening 3rd Degree, Assault 4th Degree (domestic violence), and Probation Violation on 25-year-old Omari Cryer. Cryer was observed fleeing the location and deputies and detectives attempted to apprehend him.
Based on the bodycam footage captured by an LMPD detective, Cryer ran through the alley in the 800 block of Sutcliffe Avenue, and he proceeded to retrieve a firearm from the left side of his waistband. As Cryer jumped a fence to the backyard of a home, you hear the detective say, “Drop the gun.” Followed by, “Gun, gun, gun.” To the right, off camera, is a Deputy U.S. Marshal who fired two rounds from his firearm striking Cryer. LMPD officers did not discharge their weapons. Other deputies and detectives rendered aid to Cryer while awaiting EMS. EMS responded to the area and pronounced Cryer deceased at the scene.
