   In Pennsylvania, along with New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois and DC, the continuous Muslim presence dates to the late-1800s when the American Islamic Revival went into full swing. There were even Muslim American newspapers published. Maryland and California joined as Muslim hotbeds in the early-1900s.

   One of the more famous Muslims was Alexander Russel Webb who converted after serving in the Philippines as the US Ambassador. Another was Pennsylvania's own A. George Baker. Both from the late-19th century. The Nation of Islam (1930), founded in Detroit and headquartered in Chicago, and Moorish Science (1913), founded in Newark, were influenced by pre-existing Muslim American populations.

   The late-19th century is also when Islam of the West African lineage died out in the US. The federal WPA (Works Progress Administration) did a survey of Black Americans in the 1930s in Georgia and the Carolinas where many spoke of Muslim grandparents. So just as Islam in the South died out, Islam in the North took its place and it was racially diverse.

   What a lot of people don't know is that while Catholics forced their religion onto West African slaves early on, even on slave ships, the Protestants only started forcing their religion onto African-Americans between the late-1700s and early-1800s. It's why Islam of the African lineage managed to survive in the US into the late-1800s.

   In Catholic Brazil, where slavery lasted the longest (1888), it did so into the early-1900s. In Trinidad and in Guyana, Islam survived continuously because indentured servants from British India were brought over beginning in the 1800s and many of them were Muslim, so Black Muslims couldn't die out like they did in Latin America.
