Pull up with me to a multi-agency DUI checkpoint in the heart of Miami. Sweetwater Police Department took over 107th Avenue for the night, and Assistant Chief Frank Fernandez walked me through exactly how it all works — from picking the location six months in advance, to the “chute method” of pulling eight random cars at a time, to what officers look for the moment they approach your window.We get an unfiltered look at every step: the initial driver contact, the signs of impairment (odor of alcohol, slurred, speech, glossy eyes, open containers), the field sobriety exercises, and what happens if you fail the breathalyzer.
