Los Angeles, California  On May 26, 2025, around 7:15 a.m., Van Nuys Division officers responded to a radio call regarding a possible shooting investigation in the 13000 block of Sherman Way. The comments of the call described a white van with multiple bullet holes in its windshield. When the officers arrived, they contacted a female, later identified as 42-year-old Claudia Corugedo, who was seated in the driver’s seat of the van. While speaking with Corugedo, the officers learned she had a felony warrant and attempted to detain her. Corugedo resisted and removed what appeared to be a black semiautomatic pistol from her person and pointed it at her throat. The officers re-deployed to their vehicle and requested backup; however, Corugedo drove away. The officers initiated a vehicle pursuit, which ultimately terminated in the 20900 block of Arcana Road in Topanga Division. The officers communicated with Corugedo and ordered her to surrender, but she refused.
During the standoff, Corugedo continued to point the pistol at her throat and was armed with a large machete. Metropolitan Division Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) were requested; however, prior to their arrival, Corugedo began walking toward the front door of a residence while still holding the pistol and machete, and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred. Corugedo was struck by gunfire and collapsed near the entryway of the residence. Corugedo was eventually taken into custody by SWAT personnel and immediately treated by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, who were staged at the scene. She was transported to a local hospital and treated for her wounds. She was booked for 2800.2(A) Vehicle Code, Felony Evading. No officers or community members were injured during the incident. The investigation determined Corugedo was in possession of a BB gun designed to resemble a semiautomatic pistol. A metal machete was also recovered at the scene.

I don't get the male officer, first he went to tackle her without warning the suspect she'd be placed under arrest or anytning wih just telling her to turn around? Then fails to subdue her, sees her pulling a gun out and stops his partner from defending both of them since at the moment there was no way they knew it was a BB gun and not an actual firearm, then proceed to let her back in her vehicle and on the open road… what a fiasco…
