Los Angeles, California — On July 15, 2021 around 11:20 a.m., LAPD Hollywood Patrol Division officers responded to a radio call of a “man with a gun” in the area of Cherokee Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. As officers arrived in the area, they saw a male matching the description of the suspect from the radio call walking west on the south sidewalk, holding what they believed was a firearm in his right hand. The officers exited their vehicle and gave the suspect commands. The suspect turned to face the officers, while still holding the object, extended his right arm in the direction of the officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The object the suspect was in possession of that was believed to be a firearm, was later determined to be a metallic butane lighter with a pistol grip handle. Additionally, a folding knife with the blade in the open position was also recovered at the scene. The suspect was identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office as 48-year-old Matthew James Sova. No officers were injured during the incident.

  1. That went exactly how I thought it would go. Just a random thought though…. wouldn't you make sure you're not aiming near a store with glass windows. I saw that bullet hole in the glass. That seemed a little reckless.

  2. That’s still ridiculous I think cops are bad in general it’s like looking at Donald Trump more than once…. Money what makes them greedy over many lives, 1 out of 10 you’ll be barely lucky to run in with a nice cop 🤔 that said don’t trust cops they’re just like Karen/Donald Trump‘s…. They May consider their self better or the law, That’s why considered the most hated…
If it was a fake gun that’s ridiculous they should’ve tell difference a long time ago

  3. I have frequently said officers seem ill-trained and with poor tactics. And I do wonder why the officer swore as he exited the car. (Point being it seems unprofessional, as if he was panicking, rather than coolly dealing with the situation). But, in this case, the discharge of firearms seemed proportional and unavoidable. Unlike some other situations, the officers fired few rounds and ceased as soon as the suspect was disabled. This was not an execution; this was clearly a justified action to protect others' lives. I am very sorry for the suspect who was probably just having fun but there are serious weapons out there and chances simply cannot be taken. Well done to the officers concerned.
