In Port-au-Prince, 80% of the two and a half million inhabitants earn less than two dollars a day. The city, devastated by the earthquake is now inundated with violence. In 2013, for example, approximately 700 murders took place in the Haitian capital. All pushed out to the outer coastline, the 700,000 people who call ‘Cité Soleil’ (Sun City) home are crammed into a slum. At their best, the inhabitants are merely helpless witnesses. At their worst, victims of violence and members of gangs.
According to Commander Pierre Louis, head of the local police station, residents in this deprived and unsanitary neighbourhood are witnesses to murders, kidnappings and turf wars for control over the drug trade.
