Prison systems are a for profit business model, and they figured out long ago that the most expensive prisoners to house are senior citizens. Hence all the 20 and 30 year sentences for murder, and people being released in their 60s-80s.

If you believe you've accidentally killed someone, and you don't try to get them medical help (a person can seem dead but be alive, you know) and they do end up dying… I don't get how that's not 2nd degree murder. It's like accidentally dangling someone over the edge of a cliff and then intentionally letting them go. Once you deliberately cross that line, you're a murderer in the court of common sense.
