Bodycam Captures Shootout Between GRPD Officers and an 18-year-old Suspect

Grand Rapids, Michigan — On November 11, 2025, around 1:40 p.m., in the Oakdale neighborhood of southeast Grand Rapids, near Adams Street SE and Blaine Avenue SE, two Grand Rapids police officers, a field training officer and a new recruit, were patrolling the area as part of what the chief described as “proactive police work.” They spotted an 18-year-old man who was a suspect in the theft of a firearm. Officers already knew who he was and had an “officer safety caution” issued for him, meaning police considered him potentially dangerous.

The officers parked their patrol car and got out to talk to the suspect, who was walking down the street. Dashcam and bodycam footage shows one officer calling out, “Come here, buddy, we gotta talk to you.” At first, the man kept walking away, but then he suddenly turned around and pulled out a gun, firing four shots toward the officers. The officers immediately ducked behind their cruiser for cover and returned fire, one firing seven rounds and the other firing two. Their patrol car was hit by at least one bullet, flattening a tire, and a nearby home was also struck.

Despite the exchange of gunfire, no one was hit. The suspect ran down an alley, ditching his weapon as he fled. Within ten minutes, police used drones and a perimeter search to locate and arrest him a block away. The gun was later found nearby in the grass. Both officers were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after shootings, and the Michigan State Police took over the investigation. The suspect, who remains in custody, is expected to be charged with attempted murder and assault with intent to murder.

  2. One of the things i simply cannot fathom is what they're hoping to achieve by slinging bullets at the Officers before running off. They buy themselves a 7 second head start and it'll cost them an additional 5 Years in Jail after being caught anyway. Chimpanzee Logic i guess…

  3. I don’t disagree with officers firing at the suspect. However there was another individual who was also in the line of fire and did not get hit. Thank god that person didn’t eat any lead.

  4. Dude, that barrel was pointed very close to the other cop when the new magazine was inserted. That is a point where a round could be accidentally discharged from the movements of slide closing and running at the same time.

  5. They should have sent a safety resource therapist to help the young aspiring nuclear physicist instead of just blatantly shooting at him. What a shame. Sarc
