Chicago Cop Shoots Suspect After Being Pinned During Burglary investigation

Chicago, Illinois — On September 6, 2025, Chicago Police officers were dispatched to a report of a burglary in progress in the South Austin neighborhood. Witnesses told police that several suspects were breaking into a property and were inside a vehicle believed to be connected to the crime. When officers arrived near the 5500 block of West Thomas Street, they spotted the suspect vehicle leaving the area and attempted to stop it. Instead of complying, the suspects sped off, prompting officers to pursue them through nearby streets. The chase ended a short time later near the intersection of Chicago and Waller avenues, where officers boxed in the vehicle with their squad cars. As officers exited their vehicles and shouted commands, the suspect driver suddenly reversed, crashing into two police cars and pinning one officer between vehicles. In response, that officer opened fire through the rear window of the suspect’s car, striking one of the occupants. Following the gunfire, officers detained another suspect and recovered a firearm from the scene, while a third person fled on foot and remains at large. The wounded man, later identified as 21-year-old Aiden English, was transported to the hospital, where he died from his wounds. Two officers sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officers involved were placed on administrative duties during the investigation of the shooting.
