A former police officer stands trial for shooting and killing a black woman in her mother’s home back in October 2019. The question before jurors is whether defendant Aaron Dean‘s actions constituted murder. Authorities said victim Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was at her mother’s home playing video games with her nephew when Dean, then an officer with the Fort Worth Police Department, performed a botched welfare check.
James Smith, who was neighbors with the homeowner Yolanda Carr, told the BBC in a 2020 report that he called police to perform a welfare check after his niece and nephew saw that the lights of her home were on and the front door was open on the early morning of Oct. 12, 2019. He thought that it was strange that Carr’s lawnmower and gardening equipment were plugged in. This was not an emergency call. Smith said he expected an officer to just knock on the door and see if his neighbor was fine. He did not know that Carr was in the hospital for her heart condition. Instead, Carr’s 8-year-old grandson and daughter Atatiana were up playing video games.

The fact that ANYONE can get up on a stand and justify shooting a woman in her own home, while she was playing video games, protecting her nephew- it shouldn’t surprise me that’s there’s another cop that gets up there and attempts to justify that…..and yet here I am. One thing I like with these experts is that both sides are transparent about the fact that they get paid for their services. They lay out what the experts were given. And what they were asked to testify about is given before getting into detail.
Prosecutors in general LOVE to talk about experts getting PAID when the defense uses them. Like it’s some kind of trickery. In most criminal cases, both sides do use experts and most of them do get paid a lot of money for that expertise.

This police expert is really trying hard on cross to make as many excuses for the officers as he can. Just state the facts and testify to the FACTS!! Stop making excuses!! The officer assumed from the beginning that it was a burglary in progress. That is the negligence that lead to him shooting a homeowner in her own house who was unaware it was the police lurking around her property. Manslaughter at the least.

This cop is guilty for not following standard procedures, he needs to be found guilty to set a example for other gun trigger happy coward cops.

The prosecution did not call, instructors, management etc to state with certainty that Dean acted unlawfully….not guilty..not saying he is innocent but prosecution sucked.
