I like how the girl says Brian's smile was his hidden self. There's many people out there who have that special smile that actually means guilt and evil. If you were to think of movies and shows involving mobsters, they have a special smile that means things like, "you're next", "come and get me", "I did it", etc.
In the case where people who were interviewed by police and the media said the couple kept to themselves is also a common thing with sneaky suspects who try to set things up and hide a lot of evidence.
Because murderers always tell the pizza joint people "you know what, after I eat this double cheese pepperoni, I'm going to commit murder, mayhem and unspeakable acts."

yard so neat and mowed". Law enforcement later added their desire
