WATCH LIVE: Hot Car Child Death Murder Trial — SC v. Rita Pangalangan — Day Two

A South Carolina woman faces trial for allegedly murdering her 13-year-old special needs daughter by locking her in a hot car for nearly five hours in August 2019. Rita Pangalangan claims she accidentally locked her daughter, Cristina, in the vehicle with the keys inside when she went to grab a pack of cigarettes inside the home of her boyfriend, Larry King. Authorities said when first responders arrived to administer aid, Cristina, who was wheelchair-bound and “helpless,” was “beyond help” and died. Pangalangan and King’s story allegedly fell apart when investigators seized security footage from the home that showed the couple locking Cristina in the car and leaving her unattended, returning to check on her several times.

  1. I will admit I feel bad for this dude, I believe he was clueless that the car wasn't on and that he had no concept of the time; orobkem is, all thats true because he was strung out and being strung out is not a legal defense. As for Ole Rita, I have zero sympathy for her and hope she rots.

  2. If the judge ruled in favour of Rita’s attorney on every one of his objections, the prosecution would literally not have any evidence or be able to prove their case! I understand that there is always something that the defence objects to, and sometimes the judge will actually rule in favour of the defence and not allow some evidence to be admitted at all but this defence attorney has objected to a lot of the evidence the prosecution wants to present! Does he not understand the rules of evidence? Or is he just objecting to most of it and hoping it will stick?

  3. If the video doesn’t show either of them actually turning the car on, why is there even an argument about whether the A/C was on or off? I feel like it is that simple so am I missing something? Did the video show otherwise and I didn’t see it? Those aren’t rhetorical questions, I’m genuinely asking.

  4. I also find it severely abusive how Christina who couldn’t do much of anything on her own was left alone anywhere for long periods of time with no stimulation. I can’t imagine how much suffering being stuck where you’re placed last for long periods of time with absolutely nothing to accompany or entertain you must have caused

  5. Im glad they made the mother sit through the coroners testimony. She got to hear every horrid detail of what happened to this poor girl due to her disgusting actions! Makes me sick. She even had the nerve to cry. No…u dont get to cry now ! Monster! Rip sweet christina❤

  6. I still would like to understand – was this foolish drug taking that ended in a tragedy – or was this done with an end game in mind? I don't appreciate her daughter who keeps saying "he put it i (meth) in her coffee that day". The daugher is not helping anyone to understand what happened when she saying something that ridiculous, & this is after the trial . What?! S That's not what the forensic doctor said. Her meth evels were way too high to be one time thing. Frustrating case. The mother was absolutely shocked at the verdict, that's what makes me more confused. You know maybe it wasn't done on purpose – but still, you have negligence resulting in death. You can't just go home.

  7. Holy He!!! Body temp of 109.9° and that's only because the thermometer doesn't go higher than that. Just despicable. So glad these people will most likely expire themselves in prison. And maybe at the hands of other inmates. People do not take kindly to child murderers. Especially a disabled little girl and what they did. Rita is gonna get it in prison. As she should.

  8. Him being a "legal stranger" doesn't negate his responsibility to another human being. As for him gently placing her in the car gently… I dont think we were watching the same video.

  9. What is it that was important for these two individuals to do that took all this time, leaving a child, disabled or not, to stay in a hot car and could not get out or call for help, and the child is only checked on x2. Then defence lawyers should be ashamed of themselves too, they have no disregard for the loss of life that occurred here and regard Christina’s life as unworthy.

  10. This case is absolutely heart breaking. As a little experiment I got into my car and when I went to go run errands I would not turn on the air or open the windows. By minute 10 I was extremely uncomfortable and by 20 minutes I couldn’t take it any longer. I could not IMAGINE a child sitting in the car alone and scared and hot. I know Rita claimed to love 1:56:04 her and she was your life but that does not change the fact that if it were not for your actions she would still be here.

  11. King is just so gross. I can't even look at him. The guy was only interested in his meth. Now he got cleaned and found God, oh good, but the fact is that he is guilty of killing the poor child along with brainless meth user, Rita.

  12. I applaud the prosecutors for presenting such an exact and thorough case in such an efficient, organized, and elegant way!!

Defense are also very professional for zealously representing but not throwing a wrench in every moment. They were also very economical but appropriate in their cross and motions.

The Nancy Brophy case was more complex since there was only circumstantial evidence, but the 27 days were an absolute mess.

  13. The defense lawyer is rude, condescending, and combative with the pathologist. The pathologist is not here to testify for the prosecution, he is there to testify for the victim

  14. Speaking from experience, and I do not know about Volkswagen, I do know the doors on my Chevy will not lock from the inside if the car is running. I must use the key fob if I am going to lock the doors, while the car is running with the AC on. And Mr. King, is just as responsible for this child‘s horrendous death as the mother is, in my opinion. He placed the child in the car, and then he and mom both continued to stand around in the yard, flailing, his hands, kissing all over mama and hugging her, knowing that that child was sitting in a hot car. It may not be a conspiracy to commit murder, but it was most definitely a conspiracy to cover it up. Edit: also my vehicle will only run continuously for 15 minutes with the doors locked and then will automatically shut off.

  15. Who could defend that? After watching that video while that poor child was shoved into a car and mom and friend stood around for hours that is MURDER! 😢 Mother is a monster

  16. The car was not running the experts said, and I witness like everybody else did, her opening up the back passenger door up not once but twice, the second time she had some kind of drink in her hands and left it inside the car.. She didn't leave her keys inside the car..

  17. What happened was horrible and they need to be punished BUT THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF MALICIOUS INTENT. I think their punishment is too harsh. BUT we are talking about a life. Though considering how some people commit harm and get off with lighter sentences, they shouldnt have gotten more than 20yrs max. That 19yr girl killed her father on purpose and got 1yr of probation.

  18. I have watched enough of these trials and listened to many medical experts, both the Pathologist and Toxicologist did excellent jobs in simplifying their testinomy. Too often, (And especially with the alphabet soup of credetials behind the Pathologists name) they speak in terms even the attorneys do not understand.
I found the Toxicologist's testimomy in particular quite interesting, I actually learned a lot from her.

Not that I excuse either of the defendants behaviour, however at least Ms. Pangalangan showed some degree of emotion. Mr. King was sitting in his chair as if he was watching a tv show, the type you put on but don't pay much attention to, something to just numb your mind.
He didn't care then, cares even less now!

  19. I knew a woman who left her baby in her car and the poor child died, she wasn't even sent to prison for it. She wasn't very bright mentally though, but even she should have realised it was not something you would do.
