Kelsey Smith was last seen on June 2, 2007, in a Target parking lot in Overland Park, Kansas after buying a present for her boyfriend. Surveillance video showed Smith purchasing the gifts from the store before leaving the store. Hours later, her car was found outside of an abandoned Macy’s where all of her belongings and purchases were still in the car. Smith’s body was later found near a lake. Annie Elise from 10 to LIFE breaks down what happened to Smith after her shopping trip.

  1. Cut off short and Tiny little booty shorts. Walking around in public! Regardless of what your opinion is! Wearing clothing like this while in a perfect definitely shouldn’t result in this evil! But, in the real world the world we live in IT DOES attract attention sometimes from the wrong person.

Edit: he literally said this exact thing!!! He liked her legs!

  2. My brother has taught me to be hyper aware of my surroundings especially walking to my car. I'm never on my phone out and around in public and the first thing I do when I get in the car is hit the central locking button.

  3. @LawAndCrime: The assailant probably followed his victim at a distance for a while to figure out whether she was aware of her surroundings and some of the behaviours of people nearby, as many careful predators probably do to reduce the likelihood of getting caught. This leads me to wonder how many potential victims he stopped pursuing because they noticed him at some point in a store or wherever he was following them. Thanks for your high-quality reporting on this case, such as that you found out the assailant had 17 incidents of trouble in prison. I do hope that Kelsey's parents succeed in getting the laws changed at the federal level.

  4. I love the way you tell the story ! Thank you .. are you a law major? Or where does the “law and crime” name came about? It’s my first time here I think. But yes be aware of your sorroundings!! I try to not look at my phone while walking outside anywhere but I am guilty of using it inside a store .. typically because i think that why would anything happen broad day light… but the older I get, the more time passes and I start hearing all these cases happening during the day, it gets more real and scary

  5. It sickens me that these people apologize and say things like I wish I could take it back! They’re only sorry they got caught! Poor girl and her family and friends!

  6. The presenter is good and has lots of potential. She needs a few appointments with an experienced voice coach, who could make her sound like and angel. Currently, she is using her voice in an unhealthy, bad sounding way…..she could be sooo much more!

  7. I remember watching a special on Oprah maybe 20/30 years ago and the expert said to never allow you to be taken to a second location. So when I had kids, I made sure that they know this and that they know what to do.

  8. Please please be very aware that every sentence spoken literately ends in a raspy finish.
This makes the entire video extremely difficult for me to watch.

  9. Sad story. One would hope a professional broadcaster with good language skills would report on it. Note on using the word 'him'. (15:40) "His wife and him…" (15:57) "Saw that his wife, child and him …" (16:10) "Both him and his attorney…" In each case, the word is 'he'. HE and his wife. The child and HE. Both HE and his attorney. English is very difficult. Some people make it harder for young people to learn proper English. It is my fourth language and the most difficult.

  10. Cellphones are the worst item on you when they are being used in areas where you are not at a safe place. Driving looking at them, in stores, outside walking crossing streets etc.

  11. This horrific story was well told. I also like the advice that Annie Elise gives at the end of the video. If you are attacked, scream and run. If you can't run, fight back even if the attacker has a weapon. Years ago I took a self-defense course called "Model Mugging". I hope that it still exists. Girls/women are not encouraged to fight. Most don't know how. I learned how to fight a large (well armored) man who acted like an attacker in different situations. He approached from behind or head on as we were walking, and he attacked us when we were lying down "sleeping". We were taught to scream (it was shocking how few in the class could actually do that when the course started), then to fight with all our might. The "mugger" told me that the armor he wore had to be improved constantly because women kept injuring him and other "model muggers". Those women had learned how to fight.

  12. I say also be sure you aren't sitting in an unlocked car. It is too easy to not lock your door and start looking at your purchases, your phone, etc. Lock your doors as soon as you get in your car, even before turning the key in the ignition. You could also time your departure from a store when others are also leaving.

  13. Its a good idea to put your keys in your hand closed into a fist..put the keys between each finger in a fist while waking into a store and out to your car.when you leave any store.(.even two min in to pay for gas at a gas station) If you need to hit back..the keys do much more damage than your fists! Once you do this few times you find it habit to do it everywhere you go..no different than swinging your key chain or twirling a ring on your finger.

  14. You should act as if you're under observation all the time…. there's a good chance that at times you actually are…… at a Mall or shopping center, walk out to your car indirectly and make a quick turn to your car. Have your panic alarm ready and use it if you're uncomfortable. Get in your car, lock it, start it and leave. Don't talk on your phone while walking. If anyone ever attacks you FIGHT BACK no matter what…. never leave with that person or persons.

  15. I do not think Kelsey's dad needs to be teaching any classes due to his emotional state and being too closely related to this. I see what is on the screen, "exigent circumstances". How many will take advantage of that to get what they want from someone? You see as a Christian I know and am aware of the evils of mankind, so as much I do not hate mankind, but pity and love them, I do not trust them. But I do trust and fear in the LORD God and by that the outward behavior reflects that inward act.

  16. I disagree with her father! Justice is always fair. Now, human justice is flawed. But true justice is always fair and it knows every intention of the human mind.

  17. "He who commits evil finds further evil willed by God. But he who repents of his evil finds a God who repents of his evil." Hence Justice! Before any evil is physically committed, it already happens in the mind! If you change your mind and return to God and follow in His ways/desires in commitment to Jesus then you too will not be taken out. Psalm 7:11 "God is a righteous Judge, and a God who feels indignation every day." Verse 12; If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow".

  18. Wait, before I get too far into the video. Why does the title read, "teenager" if the law states 18 is an adult. Also, what is an Adult? (this is a rhetorical question) I already know!

  19. 34:19 Nah, not ridiculous. Verizon did not fail to do their job. 'Ping' is a valid term associated with specific actions; the use of it, especially if repeated, likely prompted anyone on the phone to take specific steps.

This also explains why Verizon staff was offering upgrade stuff.
