Parkland School Shooting Judge Submits Letter of Resignation

The Florida judge who presided — and was criticized — over the Parkland school shooting trial announced her resignation and said she is working on projects that would take her career “in a more creative direction.” In a statement to Law&Crime Network, Judge Elizabeth Scherer said “I was appointed at a young age, 35 or 36, which to me was very early in my career, and I knew fairly soon this was not going to be my forever job.” The Law&Crime Network’s Jesse Weber tells us what she said in her resignation letter.

  1. The problem that people aren't understanding is that all of these things could be grounds for an appeal. That would be horrific if the Judges behavior contributes to this weasel having his guilty verdict overturned

  2. There’s some significant mob-mentality in these comments.

Nobody is sympathetic to the defense’s conduct nor are they sympathetic to Cruz. But if you were accused – rightfully or wrongfully – and subject to the threat of execution, you would want a judge who is emotionally impartial. That’s why we have a judicial system: to ensure that law is applied civilly and not emotionally.

The judge was in the wrong. The families deserved professionalism and it’s possible that the clear judicial bias may have been a factor in the jury’s rejection of the death penalty.

  3. I think the defendant should’ve gotten the death penalty. I was so disappointed by that one juror who sentenced him to life in prison without parole. I didn’t watch this case but I thought she did a good job.
The defense was not professional in my opinion.

  4. 3:18 it’s not like she was giggling and hugging the actual killer like the defense attorneys did. Completely redundant to say she “shouldn’t have hugged the families” the verdict was already done they are a grieving family. Shame on that wolf or even saying that completely heartless words. Shame.

  5. She handled the case the best I think anyone could have. The defense attorney should have their license revoked due to their inappropriate behavior in the court.

  6. This obviously seems like a hitpiece and wether it's intentional or not, it seems they left out why the judge acted the way she did towards the defence, so if I were a judge in this, you'll only flip me off once and accuse me of targeting your kids which the defence actually accused her personally of doing. So yes, they left things out for biased reasons. But according to the defence attorneys, they are the ones "who struggled the most in this"… The F***ing audacity. But according to these two, that's A okay, nothing wrong with that.

  7. She’s guilty of showing a human moment, there is no question that the shooter was guilty, the trial was a formality, and the families victims deserved to see the law was on their side, so what if she hugged the prosecution side
