He called to report a burglary. Police found 2 dead teens in his basement.

Byron Smith lived like a hermit in his small Minnesota town and often worried about a spate of break-ins at his home. One Thanksgiving, he skipped dinner with a neighbor and stayed home to keep watch. Instead, the night ended with two teens dead. Luckily for prosecutors, the entire encounter was recorded on Byron’s surveillance system.

  1. Is it possible that this was a high school prank that kept accelerating?

One dare leading to another until it turns to tragedy.

Screwing with the 'crazy guy' in the neighborhood is a teenage pastime that sometimes leads to this.

  2. Yeah, don't break into houses, kids–perhaps you'd still be drawing breath. How is the homeowner supposed to know if you're armed or not, if you're high on who knows what or not. You break into someone's home, you just signed your own death warrant.

  3. True Crime is doing an apology of burglary here by painting two criminals as victims. They had broken into his home NUMEROUS times and had stolen items, including a gun. If they were not out there committing crimes they would still be alive. Police should be ashamed they allowed such an incident to escalate without intervening.

  4. "It seems sort of irrational now".
There's no question the two young people chose to committ a crime, but Byron had made the decision to take law into his own hands to a frightenly exaggerated degree.
With all his technical equipment, he could have easily seen the teems were unarmed.
Just telling at them from the basement would have probably sent them running.

  5. What does it matter if he saw them on camera before? They still broke in and the law there said it was legal to use force against intruders. The cameras and recordings are inconsequential IMO.

  6. Lying in wait ?????
He was in his book room downstairs in his home they broke in probably would have tornted him and laughed and joke how easy it was.
Police should be charged with neglect of duty it was reported endless times.

  7. In the U.K a guy broke into a house the Owner confronted him and chased him out of the house the criminal had a heart attack and died running away.
They wanted to charge the owner
    With manslaughter.
😮😮😮 unbelivable chargesvwere dropped after people protested.

  8. Another story about two teenage thugs broke into a house. The brother and sister went home to have lunch the two thugs demaned money the brother gave them what they wanted but one still shot him in the head instatley heartbreaking to read more sister trying to revive her brother.
