Ed Sheeran Testifies in Copyright Lawsuit Involving Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’

Ed Sheeran testified in court that he did not copy Marvin Gaye’s hit song ‘Let’s Get It On.’ The singer is accused of stealing some of the melodies and rhythms from the hit and using it in his song ‘Thinking Out Loud.’ Sheeran said with all of the music produced in the world, there are going to be songs that sound similar.

  1. I wonder of Beethoven could have sued Bach for copying any of his chord progressions?
    Someone ALWAYS did things first.
I just think its silly to sue someone because their very different song happens to have some similar parts.
These types of lawsuits should not be allowed. Gaye didn't even do it first. Should he have been sued?
    Where does it end?
These lawsuits hurt art…not just the industry…not just the artist…they hurt the art.

  2. Hope he wins and they have to pay his legal bills for this frivolity. This greedy family trying to scratch out money from Ed, likely have been living off the dads estate and creating nothing themselves. Disgusting

  3. I composed a song years prior to Counting Crows releasing Mr Jones that was chord for chord the same song. But, obviously, I never recorded it for anyone more than handful of peeps to hear. And the melody and lyrics were completely different. The Counting Crows never heard it and what they did with the same chord progression is far superior than what I conjured up. They did not steal and I am humbled by their talent.
There are only a.few musical notes in the human frequency. People need to relax, specially if they had nothing to do with creating a shred of music. It's embarrassing really.

  4. 😈😈😈***GREED KNOWS NO BOUNDRIES!!!*** 😈😈😈 If everyone in the music business, was to sue other artists, for songs sounding similar, or chords being similar, I guarantee, the majority of artists would be on trial…..this is bull$%!t, & I hope the law see's it that way, or the music industry, might be in trouble….☹

  5. I'd absolutely love to have seen this trial. Very important to musicians!😊
🤔 Hmmm what are we going to do when A.I. has taken over all the music?

  6. The real copyright infringement that no one noticed is the Bad Company song Rock Steady being a total copy of the Jimi Hendrix song Foxy Lady. Youtube them and you will hear what I mean.

  7. I saw this coming.. I remember when he first came out with the song, I thought to myself that it had more than a striking similarity. Writers often match Melodies or musical beds of other artists songs inadvertently.

  8. If you sing both songs in A Capella there is nothing similar. If you play only the instrument of both songs you can definitely hear the similarities.

So does the instrument count as plagiarism or is it free to use? The Chord progression obviously is fine but is it ok to use those bass notes and rhythm is the real question here. I dunno honestly, can someone with more knowledge answer this part for me? Big Ed Sheeran fan btw.

  9. Why not handle this matter privately 😞? Don't steal, then be all in the headlines. Song is beautiful. They could have gotten together on the matter and collectively banked

  10. Ow give me a break. This is just nitpicking & money grabbing opportunity. There's only so much melodies throughout time that it is inevitable that some song portions will be similar. Oh pleeaase dismiss this case!!

  11. He did no such thing. He has way too much character and there's no way, but from a mathematical point perspective I think that it's very likely that songs will sound the same because although the combinations of notes is immense for how many different sounds can get put together and combinations, the ultimate number is fininte. And it's very possible that songs sound similar.
