‘Addicts Lie, Cheat, Steal’: Alex Murdaugh’s Other Crimes Don’t Prove He Killed Wife, Son: Defense

Alex Murdaugh’s defense attorney Jim Griffin presented his closing arguments Thursday morning. Griffin repeatedly made the claim there is “no evidence” to prove the disgraced lawyer killed his wife and son in June 2021 to cover up other crimes as prosecutors allege. “Addicts lie, addicts cheat, and addicts steal,” Griffin said. “Their theory is he slaughters Maggie and Paul to buy time.”

  1. I will say griffin is a good lawyer did well with cross. His closing was not good. To scattered and needed to highlight some of Alex good traits. The part we’re he say addicts steal lie ect they also kill. But the worse was when he basically said we higher Ed a guy to come lie about shot angle just to show Alex would be covered with blood. They knew that angle made no sense and jury agrees with state about Paul’s second shot. Which to me kind of hurt the rest of there claims. I think people think this is csi and there is tons of forensic evidence everywhere which usually doesn’t happen. Why go to all that just bring In cloths. All they would have had to do

  2. There are tons of people addicted and dependent on drugs in this country and the majority of them go to work to support their drug habit.

Drugs didn’t cause him to do what he did. He is a heartless and un empathetic narcissist.

  3. These are the most words I've ever heard that makes no sense. How can you win with a lawyer that has nothing to add. He just repeats what is already there. He brings no alternative views to this. Why? Because there are none.

  4. It seems this defence attorney doesn't believe his own rhetoric. His weak and stumbling closing statement is choc full of doubt. Not convincing at all. I think defeated is the best way to describe his demeanour. I wonder what AM is thinking during this shoddy attempt…

  5. I am not saying that I would vote for conviction because I do have doubts but… when my sister and I were little, my uncle was a hard-core smoker who always warned us of the dangers of smoking. One day we decided that it would be beneficial to him if we hid all of his cigarettes. I saw a very frieghtening side of him that day that I had never seen before and that I will never forget.

  6. I’ve watched the entire trial. The prosecution did not meet its burden, which is unfortunate. I would hate to be on this jury I feel that if he’s convicted, he’s convicted on the basis of his lies because you can’t trust anything he says, and he definitely has a appealable case. Thanks to this judge, letting the prosecution bring in all of the financial crimes.

  7. His whole demeanor and reactions to all the testimony is so odd, wrong, weird, awkward, stiff, and more. His lawyer's 'public speaking' skill is crap. Stumble, stammer, repeat, constant fidgets in his chair when his partner is closing, running track in court?

  8. Not sure why they think it's so far-fetched to suggest that someone under extreme emotional, psychological, and financial distress could commit a desperate irrational act. The prosecution never argued that Alex's actions were logical

  9. He would have lost everything, his wife would have left him, his kids would have forgotten him, his brothers would have never forgiven him after all the fraud he’s committed and smearing the family name in the mud. He 100% did it it’s really easy to see and comprehend. There’s absolutely 0 evidence of anyone else being there it’s that really short time frame from when he was at the kennels and his parents house. The very small amount of evidence all points at him.

  10. Wow just wow! Just him saying the "rational" thing to do is for him to kill himself not someone else just shows how desperate the defense has gotten. They might as well have just stood up and said "we don't know"

  11. Almost every week–every day even–the news is filled with men better than Alex, who kill their entire families and sometimes themselves. Alex is a narcissistic sociopath, and he has no morals. They confronted him about his pills, and Maggie was threatening divorce, and Paul was causing everything to come out because of the lawsuit.

  12. I think he murdered them in the hopes of getting an insurance payout. He was clearly a money hungry addict that obviously would do anything to get money for his fix. And if he didn't kill them, he would have heard gunshots and or dogs barking. Guilty!

  13. I can't get passed am very first interview in the car. He said I loved my wife. You just found her and you are already saying her in the PAST thence. I don't know but I would think you would still be in the present

  14. Alex’s lawyer has taught me a very good lesson…..what to make sure my lawyer does NOT do to defend me! I feel like his own lawyer is working hard to nail him to his own coffin.

  15. No a rational man! A lier, a thief, an addicted, a man whose a house of card is falling, a man whose the wife is not willing to keep risking her assets to save a drug addicted an a son whose is being force to lie and cover up the boat accident and his dads drug addiction!

  16. here is what happened- Maggie and Paul found his drugs… he was about to go into withdrawals. they confronted him and then wouldn't give him those pills. I know opiate addiction well.. the desperation is REAL. I think its that simple… Paul had that bag of pills. he pointed the gun at him screaming for him to give them back. Paul didn't take it seriously… Alex shot him. Maggie came running out. and he shot her too. he grabbed those pill's. and that's why he still had them…. my theory….

  17. The defence is struggling here I wonder why..
Alex is a very cunning, evil man. He has reaped what he has sown, deception, lies, selfishness, theft, untrustworthiness, no compassion for others are a few things that have been exposed over the last 6 / 7 weeks of this trial .
For years & years & years he has gotten away with his despicable 2 faced behaviour & but it seems the rooster have finally come home to roost.
No doubt in my mind this man is capable of murder
Paul was speaking from the grave
If his video had not have been recovered putting Alex @ the scene of the crime, this man would have continued his big lie.
He is guilty & needs to be put away forever
