I liked being around my brother when he was sober but he's been a lifelong alcoholic since he was about 16 and is now 61 so periods of sobriety for him are pretty rare. It's cost him his first wife, both kids, and three of his four sisters but he refuses to see the problem and do something about it. He always tells us that yes, he knows he's an alcoholic but that, no, he doesn't plan to do anything about it and why are we all being so mean to him, etc. I'm just done. Totally done with him as are both of his children. Alcohol ripped their family apart.

What a great generation we've managed to not raise in this country. But that's what NOT parenting and letting the government raise our kids gets us. Thanks goodness not everyone is like this, but I promise you it's no small number anymore.
