This Episode of Evolution of Evil show the stories behind Joseph Stalin and Hideki Tojo.
For 30 years Joseph Stalin “the man of steel” ruthlessly dominated the Soviet Union. Born into poverty on the fringes of the Czarist Russian Empire, he became a gangster and then a revolutionary. He was part of the original Bolshevik leadership team, but when Vladimir Lenin died he took his chance to grab the top spot. His quest for absolute power transformed his nation, but at a brutal cost.
Hideki Tojo was made Prime Minister of Japan in 1941, he gave the order to bomb Pearl Harbor, followed by a swift invasion of South East Asia. Tojo approved many further extreme acts of brutality, with no battlefield experience he ran a disastrous campaign in which he lost nearly a third of his men. With the fall of the island of Saipan in 1944, his career was finished.

Always incredible to see an intro title sequence like that – where it sticks out to me so much that these disparate, cruel leaders, dictators and autocrats all had something in common – they're all men. So odd that we societally shy away from this obvious common denominator. It's not just male prevalence across all violent crime, it extends to human rights abuses also being committed either directly (physically) or indirectly, as these men all did. We need to deal, globally, with the ways we always have and still are, raising boys. It's a gender issue. So few women (yes, there have been some – probably still 1% of all historical leadership though) have pillaged, murdered, and led with hate. It's to do with ego, violence, control, power. Jeez.

Actually that is some what wrong about the japanese not declaring war on the US. They sent a cable over to there embassy in Washington DC which was to be delivered minutes before the start of conflict but was delayed due to translation and clerical errors, so it arrived too late. It was not there intention to break the law of war to not attack until you first declare war.
