The split between progressives and Democrats widens; Rennie Davis on ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’

In the first segment of this week’s Marc Steiner Show, we discuss how the left can make its voice heard in the incoming Biden administration with Bill Fletcher, a racial justice, labor, and international activist and author of numerous books, including “They’re Bankrupting Us!”, and organizer and activist Shana East, a member of the Coordinating Committee for the Illinois Poor People’s Campaign and the founder of the grassroots campaign Illinois for Bernie.

In the second segment, we talk to Rennie Davis, one of the members of the Chicago 7 and the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam, about “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” recently released on Netflix.

  1. Mr. Davids is an old guard American activist … oohh.
I have a low level of English but Shana East emphasized that problems common to many people can be "engines" of collective citizen action. But it is not easy to do and requires agreements between civil organizations, political work in the streets and neighborhoods. She is clear and concise.
Really, she could be my hero … siii.

  2. The new book 'MAY DAY 1971' puts a special spotlight on R. Davis, it's very thorough. I was at the 24, April Out Now march, the weekend before where I believe we really had atleast an honest 300,000 there. The May Day march on Monday was very effective, government employees attendance at work was actually the best it's ever been, so they can't say it wasn't peaceful. Chicago would have been peaceful had not the Daily machine, and COINTELPRO been working together covering each others backs. Nixon had all ready sabotaged the Paris Peace talks by the fall of '68. GHWB pulled the same trick in '79-'80 with Iran to get Reagan into office.

  3. The right is literally calling for anyone who didn’t vote for Trump to be lined up against the wall and shot. They are calling a vote for a Democrat is a vote for treason. Trump’s own lawyer said they should be drawn and quartered and shot at dawn. They are advocating for murder of their enemies. No one is addressing the fact that the Democrats lost the Senate. And you DON’T have the mandate unless you get the Senate!

  4. The Democrat party is and always has been an embarrassment to this country. They were the only people that owned slaves, assassinated Lincoln, started the KKK and Jim Crow laws and to this day are still living off other people's hard work. Democrats are about twice as likely as Republicans to have received welfare and Republicans Give More to Charity Than Democrats.Welfare including affirmative action is the only problem in this country. Jobs are the answer.

  5. Today's miserable hate-filled liberals obediently trust gov't & corporations, embrace conformity, judge everyone by face color & one of an infinite number of genders, preach hate & intolerance, call everyone else racists, call all free speech; dangerous hate speech & eagerly issue CO2 death threats to our children. Is this 1936 Germany all over again?

  6. The election IS NOT legitimate! There has been so many problems that the vote CANNOT be trusted! NOTHING about Biden and Harris is legitimate here! This is equal to the rigging that happened to Maduro and the subsequent push to UNDEMOCRATICLY install a puppet and a fascist administration!! Biden/Harris = Guaido

  7. Bill is projecting. The ones not facing reality are the TDS sufferers and those believing that COVID is like something worse than swine fever or ebola. Terrorized and deluded fools abound and they mostly voted blue, falling into a worse trap than the one they have been in the past four. The Biden/Harris team does not hide how horrible the admin will be, how much WORSE this will be.

On top of that, the mentioning of sexism being a factor in not deciding on Hillary is a JOKE! NO ONE considers that! EVERYONE talks about her terrible track record and extensive criminality! To even consider her is insanity itself!

On the flip side, they both have a good grasp on the situation otherwise and are still refreshing to hear, and they bring points I did not specificly consider. The comparisons have many valid points.

  8. U.S. labor holds all the cards. Now that the election is over, Labor, minus USPS, should call for  a General Strike . Richard Trumka needs to be ousted at the AFL-CIO. A General Strike is needed.
    A list of Demands:
    – $2000 mth for every mother and father in America.
    -Medicare for All
-bring back the 1950s tax code
-let the military operate the trucks, trains, and plains of the corporate commerce, to include the loading and unloading
    – this list of demands are only the starting point.
-The Stock Market is in the shitter, labor needs to strike while the iron is hot and go for the juggler. The Corporate Dems are nothing but Republican/NeoLiberal KuKs. Stay off the streets and let the Covid plague work on the cops, militias, and Nazis.

  9. We must be VERY lucid in distinguishing that CORPORATE DEMS are the enemy of the party and the people, not moderate ones. On the contrary, people are exhausted of “woke” people apologizing for nonsense from when they were teenagers and walking on eggshells. Defunding the police, gender neutral bathrooms, starting gender transition when the child is a toddler, pro-choice rhetoric, etc., these are precisely the foci that are going to alienate working class, blue-collar, and even B.A./B.S. white voters in the Midwest whom we desperately need. We need to focus on being the part of F.D.R. We need to be populist Dems, moderate socialist Dems. It’s the economy, stupid! We should have learned this lesson by now, and I think this panel mostly understands this, thankfully! But we must be careful. This is not the time for being the most “woke” and showing how morally superior we are. This is the time for saving our country and economy -for everyone, including black and LGBT people.

  10. What about Reparations exclusively for American Lineage Decendants of those who were enslaved in the U.S. This is the unfinished of the ADOS Civil Rights Movement of the Civil Rights Movement. Focus on getting this done first to close the economic racial wealth gap with White America.

  11. Why do you refer to "centrist Democrats" and "moderate Democrats?" Those terms make corporate Democrats (supposedly liberal politicians who serve corporate interests) seem reasonable and insinuate that Progressives are unreasonable and dangerous. Call them what they are: right wing Democrats, corporate Democrats. I am 72 years old and have watched the radical shift to the right of both parties over the past 45 years. Biden and the Clinton's were instrumental in that shift. Today's so-called Progressive positions were mainstream Democrat 50 years ago.

  12. I just watched some scientists talk about the end of our civilisation due to rapid climate change so listening to this and my other political shows is a bit funny really.

  13. Um…
Hate to break this to you, but…
The Democratic party doesn't have to do squat for progressives and Biden, Pelosi, even deep down, The Squad knows that.
    Here's a little secret why.
    Ready?

WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY GONNA GO?!!!
PROGRESSIVES HAVE LITTERAL NOWHERE ELSE TO GO POLITICALLY!!!
Progressives are a failed version of the Tea Party.
