Months after a catastrophic Norfolk Southern train derailment changed their lives and communities forever, residents of East Palestine, Ohio, and the surrounding area feel “numb,” lied to, and abandoned… and they’re running out of drinkable water. We cannot forget about them. On Tues, May 30, from 7-8:30pm EST, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez will host a solidarity livestream and pledge drive to raise money and secure much-needed supplies for residents living in and around East Palestine. We will speak directly with residents living in and around East Palestine about what they and their families are going through, what assistance they are (or are not) receiving from the government and from Norfolk Southern, and what we can all do to help. As an afterthought, I would encourage everyone to review the plight of the once great city of Detroit. In the 50's and 60s it was a GLOBAL power house, revered by the nation and visited by princes and potentates. Six decades later it is crumbling, rotting corpse of American enterprise that was shipped overseas by our overtly "patriotic" oligarchs. The lives of MILLIONS were traded for even greater personal profits, all with the overt blessing of our government "representatives". To provide assistance to the residents of East Palestine is a noble and humane thing to do and I totally encourage it. However, looking at the bigger picture, the sad plight of that small Ohio town is merely a "brushfire" in the raging conflagration that was ignited by oligarchic Neo-liberals almost 50 years ago. The livelihood of millions was shipped overseas while genuine democracy OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people was buried in bullshit. Much to my astonishment, in spite of the growing evidence of increasing oligarchic control, and the looming specter of fascism, so few Americans seem cognizant of the forces working against them. Hopefully, the events in East Palestine we light a beacon of awareness. If East Palestine is not a "wake-up call" to millions of us "little folks", then we genuinely are doomed to an eve worse future.
I am mortified to say it, but I believe that East Palestine is truly emblematic of our national government dysfunction and indifference. I was once surprised to read of the excesses and inequities that were prevalent during America's "Golden Age" where extreme poverty and child labor abuses occurred simultaneously with the rise of coal and iron and oil "BARONS" of immense, obscene wealth. It seems that we have almost come full circle. As someone very wise stated, "those that are ignorant of history are bound to repeat it". Here we go again!
