I've managed to make it 13 years in my law enforcement career at this point. I've been diagnosed with PTSD, an anxiety disorder and have major sleeping problems. I've sacrificed a lot for my career. I'm currently at a department that has no room for advancement. I'm a night shift Sergeant and I know that's as high as I'll go for a very long time. My best advice for new cops is to do your homework on the department you apply for. See if there's other speciality units like swat, bomb squad, detective, street crimes, gang unit, etc. Make sure there's off duty jobs because you're definitely gonna need the income due to the average at best starting salary. Sometimes that salary is ridiculously low. Make sure that department has structure and that it doesn't have a bad reputation. What makes a good cop? Very broad question but I'll answer with a few basic but meaningful words. Bravery, honesty, integrity, mental toughness, kindness and generosity, empathy, a humble mindset, professional, goal orientated and teamwork minded, very thick skin (especially in 2020 with all the cop hate) be a good communicator, be a great listener and have a genuine desire to make a profound positive impact on the jurisdiction you serve. Have a good faith system and be sure to use your vacation time. When you're off work, be off work and have hobbies outside of work. Keep your kind occupied. If the job is getting to you and nothing is helping then find a new line if work. Educate yourself on more than just law enforcement and try not to put all of your eggs in one basket. It's so difficult to get hired as a cop now days but so incredibly easy to loose your job over a split second decision or a moment of weakness. Some of the best cops in my opinion focus more on things like drug interdiction and getting weapons out if the hands of violent criminals. Finding stolen property and catching burglars in the act. A well rounded officer is one that's proactive and makes good arrests, all while showing compassion and respect to everyone they meet. One that's gonna prevent crime before it happens by putting yourself out there and staying proactive, all while respecting the rights of all individuals. Being a good communicator is huge in today's world of law enforcement. Also understand that not everyone deserves a ticket and not everyone deserves to go to jail. I said it'd be a short answer but that's as brief as I know how to make it. I hope someone benefits from this advice.

Hey mike, how do you feel about those preparing for a career in law enforcement only obtaining the minimum education requirements, because they want to remain a road cop for their entire career? Smart or dumb move?
I actually live up in VA but my family is in riverview fl so I’m actually very aware of all those places. Not much to do down there so once you’ve been through Tampa and Saint Pete thats kinda it. Will add that I think the Saint Pete’s night life is a bit better then Tampa. Very humid, hope you enjoyed it though.

A good cop to me is someone who interacts with the community in such a way that people from other States/Countrys think/feel like your City of work is a place where they inn the future could live due to how safe it feels.

How many bad cops did you testify on?
Racial profiling no. Profiling you bet that is a huge part of the job. Even if your not a cop, you profile people everyday it's not wrong it's what humans do, cops are just looking deeper, again racial profiling is very very different.
Not related to this video but I wanted to know how you felt about the gun debate? In Rhode Island they are currently trying to pass a bill to confiscate AR15s from legal owners.
What makes a good cop? the answer is as hard and as simple as this attaude in check ive seen officers belittle a old woman for going 4 miles over the speed limit. Be kind to people unless the situation calls for not being nice . uphold your oath and the Constitution. stop the thin blue line brotherhood bs you know a officer is doing wrong dont be part of the cover up
