Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police video showing officers fatal shooting an armed teenage suspect in a June 2016 confrontation was released under a judge’s order, the first test of a new state law. Body and dashboard camera video showing police fatal shooting an armed teenage suspect in a June 2016 confrontation near University City was released Thursday under the first test of a new state law for making public such material. Footage matched the narrative given by authorities after the shooting: That Rodney Rodriguez Smith, after wounding a rival aboard a CATS bus, fired at responding officers while fleeing from them, and they fired multiple shots in return. From different vantage points, the six videos showed the search for a man who’d fired aboard the bus.

From his body camera, Officer Garret Tryon can be seen searching in the dark for a suspect, then pulling in and calling out seven times, “Drop the gun!” A fusilade of shots follow, then Tryon orders the man four more times to drop the gun. Then came four more shots. Tryon tells another officer at the scene, “He shot at me.” Release of the video reflected the policy declared by CMPD Chief Kerr Putney in September toward more transparency in conflicts between police and the public. It also represented a legal milestone in the public’s right to gain access to police video because it was the first time a court approved a petition under North Carolina’s new law requiring judicial approval to release police dashcam and body camera video.

  1. Comply or die, MAYBE give them a chance or 2, but three sttikes and your OUT. Shoot until they go down, then walk up carefull and plug a couple rounds in their skull. We cant expect to evolve while we completely deny survival of the fitest, look around people and witness the level of ignorance running rampant in humanity today, smh.,

  2. Officer: drop the gun, drop the gun!! Let me see your 🤚s

Suspect: officer I can’t hear 👂 you I’m dead as fuck

Officer: get in the ground now! Get in the ground!

Suspect: officer I cannot I’m already dead 😵 as fuck I can’t move!

  3. I hate what an officer has to go through mentally after shooting an armed suspect that didn't care about their lives. The shock that I see in these videos is real and despite the heroics of the officers, it seems unfair that they have to go through it. In these incidents I'm team blue. Keep up the exceptional work!

  4. Got to love all the people trollingly assuming liberals disapprove of cops retaliating against an armed suspect. Makes me wonder how many are real and how many are Russians pretending to be real.

I'm a liberal, and I consider that not only was the police conduct in this video correct and professional, but they even gave an obviously armed and likely homicidal suspect repeated opportunities to end the situation safely and without further incident. The suspect didn't, and so the suspect got himself (justifiably) shot. That's the way the cookie crumbles.

  5. search the criminals names and look at how evil he looks. he was 18 but already had multiple mugshots. evil cross tattoo between the eyes! GREAT Job Brave Officers!
