Trooper Rescues Man From Burning Car; Arrests Him For DUI

On November 9, 2017 Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Dante’ M. Hanns was patrolling U.S. 20 when he noticed a two-vehicle crash involving a Ford Mustang and Dodge Durango SUV near U.S. 20’s intersection with County Road 198 in Green Creek Township. Hanns checked on the vehicles and noticed Jose Gonzalez, 21, of Sandusky, Ohio, trapped inside the Mustang, conscious but not alert.

As Hanns assessed the situation, the Mustang began to smoke and catch fire. The vehicle’s driver-side door had been damaged in the crash and wouldn’t open, and Gonzalez’s leg was pinned. So the trooper went to the passenger side of the Mustang and broke the window Sovereign Citizen style, pulling Gonzalez from the burning vehicle with the assistance of Registered Nurse Ginger Havlin, who had stopped when she saw the accident.

As can be seen in this grainy video (which is unfortunately the best copy that exists), less than one minute after getting Gonzalez out of the car, the fire spread and the Mustang became completely engulfed in flames.

Gonzalez escaped with a broken shoulder blade…. and a DUI.

It turned out that Gonzalez had failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of U.S. 20 and County Road 198, and he had crashed into the Durango as he was turning eastbound onto U.S. 20. Hanns stated in his report that Gonzalez admitted to drinking alcohol before the crash.

The driver of the Durango, Amanda Reyes, 30, was transported to Bellevue hospital as a precaution.

Gonzales would likely have not made it out alive had it not been for the actions of the trooper. At the time of this incident, Hanns had only started his job in law enforcement eight months prior. For their lifesaving actions, Ginger Havlin and Trooper Donte’ M. Hanns each received a certificate of recognition, which when you see what they did seems a bit lame, but also very well deserved.

  1. The people saying that he should sue the officer for pulling him out of a burning car wtf you'd rather burn to death?

  2. My elite investigative skills result in this conclusion: dude saw the giant cross, said "jesus take the wheel!"

  3. I’m a retired Fire Fighter, so many times I’ve rolled up to this exact type of Crash only to find a drunk walking around and dead maimed bodies in the other car. I really hate drunk drivers.

  4. Not the trooper saved a young man but God gave him second chance, Gad saved him, there is Cross right above a bearning mustang can Anyone see it?
If not God maybe trooper would never be there and be late. It’s a special video to me.

  5. These DUI alcohol or drug crashes are NOT accidents! Please don't refer them as such it only helps the insurance company and the suspect later reduce civil responsibility for the damage they cause.

  6. I have to say I watch a lot of police videos and it's always the Ohio State Police that I see doing relatively good things compared to the other states I'm sure there's still issues but just noticed that they seem to be doing doing a good job out there compared to my state of Mass who always has cops arrested for being corrupt and always in the front page of a newspaper and get to keep there pensions and jobs

  7. "….So the Trooper went to the passenger side of the Mustang and broke the window…SOVEREIGN CITIZEN STYLE" 😜 AhhHaHaHa Awww man that's some good commentary right there! 😂😆😅👍

  8. I can't stand ppl who need so much attention. That lady from the crash didn't look bad off and sounded just fine. But she asked to be taken to the hospital "just be checked out, in case"…in case she wants to sue? AND it has to be the hospital she works at..if you're hurt what difference does it make which one you go to? I smell a rat. Lady knew she had a case right away and wasn't gonna miss out on big bucks.

  9. There you see how desperate officers try to get people arrested……they even pull them out of burning vehicles-only to make another arrest……😉

  10. This is one of the many reasons why, when lights come on behind me, I pull over! Even if they are not meant for me. Law enforcement is often first responders.
