Tallahassee, Florida — On September 25, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers with the Tallahassee Police Department responded to what was originally reported as a residential burglary in the 2300 block of Sandpiper Street involving multiple armed suspects. Through the ongoing investigation, it was determined responding officers interrupted a targeted, drug-related home invasion in progress. A suspect, matching the description of the initial 911 call, was observed by officers fleeing the scene. The officers gave chase and verbal commands for the suspect to stop, but the suspect did not comply. During the foot pursuit, another involved suspect emerged from the residence and began firing at the officers.

The rounds struck one of the responding officers, and they immediately returned fire. The injured officer, Caleb Babb was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and taken into surgery. At this time, the officer is in stable condition. Less than a week after the shooting, Officer Babb was discharged to Encompass Health, where medical professionals continued to work around the clock to assist him with regaining his strength and mobility. Following the shooting, Officer Babb received the Purple Heart award. The award, presented by Chief Revell, is the highest honor bestowed upon a member of the Tallahassee Police Department who is significantly injured or killed in the line of duty. Officer Babb is the fourth recipient of the award and the first to receive it while still living. All three suspects were apprehended and charged within ten days of the incident.

Officer be aware they ain't stop making guns after you receive yours. At night slow your roll you can't give chase before the investigation the cruiser was supposed to provide extra light & cover. Officer could of prevented being shot with having weapon drawn and creep walk than verbal command let me see your hands. Officer radio dispatch & backup to soon before realizing the situation. It's night his alone let's go of normal ways of thinking an think like a crook.
