A felon stole three cars and led officers on a high-speed chase before dying in a SWAT shootout in Northeast Seattle Sunday, police said.

The armed carjacking suspect, identified by King County medical examiners as Raymond Azevedo, 35, had fired out of a stolen Chevy Camaro at officers just before the 2 p.m. shootout in the Wedgwood neighborhood, according to police reports
The Seattle Police Department released dashcam footage showing the pursuit after investigators said Azevedo flashed a handgun in several businesses and seized the three different cars at gunpoint.

Twelve officers are on paid leave as investigators piece together the 90-minute crime spree that started near the Pike Place Market, moved northeast to the campus of the University of Washington and ended after police slammed his vehicle at NE 68th St. and 35th Ave. NE. Miraculously, no officers or civilians were seriously hurt.

Police said staff at a Pike St. Storyville Coffee saw Azevedo gripping a handgun in his pocket while “visibly sweating and acting nervously” around 12:30 p.m. He fled from the coffee shop after employees dialed 911, pointed the gun at the owner of a nearby Turkish Delight restaurant, and then took off from there, police said.

Azevedo moved on to a Quiksilver, where he brandished the gun at another worker and ran out to the Under the Needle tattoo shop, according to investigators. Police said he took out two handguns and forced the tattoo parlor staff to show him the back door.

That’s when he took over a Red Volkswagen Golf from its owner and drove it to the UW Athletic Center on Montlake Blvd. NE around 1:30 p.m. Investigators said Azevedo entered the lobby and stole a red minivan from a man inside.

He then tried to switch cars again at a nearby Shell gas station, but a woman at the Shell fled before he could get her Mercedes, police said. Officers tracked him down just after he stole the Camaro from a car rental lot on Roosevelt Way NE.

Azevedo is shown in the dashcam footage of the black Camaro speeding the wrong way down a street, careening over a sidewalk and shooting out the window at the officers. One officer is seen hitting the Camaro’s bumper with his police cruiser before a different officer smashes head-on into the car minutes later.

Police said a SWAT team opened fire when Azevedo pointed his gun at the officers and started angling the Camaro towards them. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The graphic footage shows a plume of smoke coming from the vehicle as it spins out and finally comes to a stop.

Azevedo, whose home address is listed in Lakewood roughly 40 miles south of Seattle, had completed community custody Nov. 7 after one year of prison time between October 2013 to October 2014, . His previous convictions include second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, first-degree malicious mischief, attempting to elude police and third-degree assault of law enforcement, a state Department of Corrections spokesman

  2. Terrific job by the officers. To the carjacker…Live by the gun DIE by the gun. It all ended well. Officers and the public safe and one criminal no longer a problem.

  3. The car to be chased comes in sight first at 10:06. The sequence before that is still interesting, i.m.o., showing the professional driving and attitude while getting to that point. Speed is needed, but when participating in an incident before the whole purpose of driving with siren and lights is lost.
Then, during the pursuit while in the city they restrain their speed to maintain some safety on the street while attempting to keep the vehicle within view.
All in all, very professionally done. Respect and enjoyed watching this.
