Roadcam #13: Albuquerque Officer Was Watching Youtube on Laptop Before Crash – Everything Law and Order Blog

Very regularly – we’re talking once or twice a day – someone leaves a confused comment, wondering why they can’t find anything online about an incident I covered on Real World Police.

The answer those people are looking for, of course, is that many of the videos on Real World Police have not been covered by any other media outlet. Ever. I have been accused of faking entire videos by people who don’t understand this. (And who apparently think that I have the time and resources to do such a thing.)

The tools that I use to find and investigate stories are not secret. They are the tools of investigative journalism, and they include:

-Agency reports
-Analysis of court records and case filings
-Databases of public records
-On-record interviews
-Legal research
-Lawsuits
-Regulatory reports
-Scrutiny of government practices
-Off-the-record sources (typically only anonymous to you)
-State and federal access to public records laws, and
-Subscription-based research tools

From there it’s ‘just’ a lot of hard work. And I like it.

That said, this story is a bit unusual.

When I am working on a story – which is always (and it’s never one) – mine is not the only investigation going on. I cover law enforcement and crime, which means that the stories I cover usually contain their own investigations. Police investigations. Criminal investigations.

Those investigations are usually over by the time I get involved.

Not this time.

In this case, rather than covering a police investigation I am covering the police. And mine is the only investigation.

What I found can be summed up in short order:

Contrary to popular belief, police officers are in fact human beings. And sometimes people do stupid things.

Like crash their police car while watching Youtube.

Check it out.

  2. @real world police please get the video of otero county nm letting a former ocso deputy go from dwi who was a state police officer who is also in relationship with the 12th district judge Suggs. The name of the officer was Jessica turner.

  3. Any follow-up on this? Was the officer involved discovered by his department to have been distracted while driving? The video makes it pretty clear YouTube was on the screen right up the moment of the crash. I wonder if there was traffic cam footage of the incident. Obviously, I believe the civilian driver and hope she got a good pay out from the department for being rear-ended.

  4. Sad part is that shell get pulled over relentlessly from now on for daring report an officer related incident. Try having a female cop as a girlfriend and dumping her and see what happens if u dont believe me.

  5. I don't see what the problem is………khbqeljhrvbwstuh buruvgeurvgweuvgeurgvqugvugcqv uctvru….aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  6. What sucks is I listen to YouTube for my commute. I have premium, make a playlist of things like history channel etc. if I got in a wreck it would be hard to explain I wasn’t watching.

  7. This happens way toooo much in abq. Me and my husband pulled up next to a k9 suv apd officer he was watching youtube then switched to craigslist in 2 mins while driving haha

  8. I can’t stand high anxiety exhibited like that of the lady driver involved. Has two other people speaking for her and giving the information while she huffs and puffs. A minor accident, get over yourself. Quit being so damn fragile

  9. Another good argument for firewalling off the Internet from police mobile data networks, or at least requiring password access that expires when the vehicle is in motion.

  10. That dude is busted either way. Most departments nowadays have an agency cloud account that is connected to all of the computers in the field so that officer's data is automatically backed up and can be accessed by supervisors at any given time. Every time an officer drives into the station's parking lot the toughbook automatically dumps data into the station's secure cloud storage. So there is atleast 4 different servers that have the same data saved incase one of the servers crashed or whatever. So I am pretty sure his department reviewed said data from his toughbook and saw specifically what programs and browsers he had open at the time of impact. Im sure he was transported to hospital per department policy obviously to be checked over for injuries as well as drug and alcohol screening while the LT was looking at everything he was doing on his laptop before the crash. Even without the body cam, dude prolly would have been busted. Not very smart, atleast pull into a parking lot 😂
