RESPONSE: Will Writing Letters to Criminals Make Them Stop? – Everything Law and Order Blog

“donut tread on me” tee: http://www.donuttreadonme.com

Memphis is a fairly crime ridden area of the country. While I agree with District Attorney Amy Weirich that career criminals need to stop being…well, ya know…criminals, I’m not sure that asking them to stop in a letter is going to be an effective approach.

  1. I just see the criminal reading that letter, laughing, showing his friends at the bar, while bar erupts in laughter, criminal then motivated to conduct more criminal acts.

  2. i live in shelby county in memphis tennessee. and when i herd that about letters i laughed my fukin ass off so hard. i was like is this for real??

  3. Does anyone tell them about the gospel? Does anyone make them do something to make money, pay their jail bills and pay the store owner (or whoever that stole from) have them start a business but not let them have the money..it goes to paying for their own time in court, lawyer, ect. Have Bible studies, let them learn a skill (at their own expense) and if they don't show that they are legit in change, let them stay. child molesters, It's been said time and time again that they cannot rehabilitate them, that would take a miracle so stop letting them run free to hurt other kids, none of this short term sentencing… and let them stay at their own cost. Go back to preaching God's word and stop with the psycho babble, it's not working. A nation who turns it's back against shouldn't be surprised when it gets in trouble, it's consequence for sin.

  4. LOL – Cease and Desist letters to criminals? Dirty Harry has just face-palmed himself in disbelief and mutters "Well, shit. Send the fellas home, we're all out of work. Bad guys are now going to go straight. The ones who can actually read."

  5. Two years since this was posted and it's still, by and large, my absolute favorite of all Mike's posts. The level of sarcasm and its delivery still make me laugh when I think of it. And he's absolutely on point in every part of this clip.

  6. Nothing like a stern letter to make a career criminal change their ways. It might work if the envelope contained an explosive device. "You will stop committing crime in 5…4…3…2…1…"

  7. 3:11 Im not overly keen on that term you mericans often use '' the bad guys ''………a lot 'bad guys' are disadvantaged and desperate guys rather than bad guys. Bad guys exist of course, but I dont think people shoplifting for food………..or even to pay for drugs are bad guys. They are desperate guys who need to change the way they are living and might need help doing so. There are plenty million and billionaire guys that I see as far worse human beings, who live just inside the law, and are bad guys, but they are the good guys cos they wear a suit and tie and abide by the law whilst they disrespect and underpay their employees…….but the man who cant find work and steels food is a bad guy. Meh.
edit – no hate btw, thanks for the upload.

  8. It sounds rather ridiculous, what the man says in the beginning…………..and of course stictly speaking, he is wrong……..if you engage in criminal activity, youre a criminal. But I THINK what he was trying to say was that they arent career criminals. I have spent time in a medium security prison in the UK and the way I would describe the convicts there is, they are failures and fuck ups (as I was), people who have failed to make it………….rather than people who have strived to make it criminally. He certainly could have articulated himself better. But thats the 'vibe' I got from his statement.

  9. Mike The Cop…. Most times I agree with your opinion and how you look at things. But this letter idea I don't think is really that bad of one!? More depends on the criminal/crime I'm thinking!? I'm betting MOST drug dealers would shut down shop (if even for awhile) if they got a stern letter in the mail basically saying "we know who you are and what you're doing! This is your one and ONLY chance to stop/find a better job or suffer consequences!" from the DEA/Sheriff or even local court/prosecutor! Only because most of these guys think they're too slick to get caught or they're doing it better/different than the millions of D Boys before them! Yea, sending a letter to same regard to a potential murder… Not so effective I'm thinking!? Lol. Keep up the great videos! Edit: Watched little further into video. Obviously it wouldn't work for repeat offenders! If they were going to get "the clue" you'd think the first 2-5 times in court woulda done that!? Lol. Lock them up for the max sentences!

  10. There needs to be changes to the law system. Rapist, murders, serious crime need to spend more time in jail than the guy with an ounce of pot. A crime committed with a gun; should not be pled down. If a felon caught with a gun he's but in prison. A person using a gun while committing a crime does get to plea it down. I'm sure there are a lot more that needs change. Truthfully I don't think the people in power don't want things changed.

  11. What’s your idea Mike?
The prisons are called “corrections” yet you say we should “punish”.
I love your channel and I’m subscribed, but you need to present an alternative idea
    if you plan to criticize.
    Peace.

  12. 8/14/18……I sure hope none of those letters to the criminals hurt their "tender feelings"!
PERHAPS they should have "safe spaces" for criminals with bunnies to pet & coloring books?
