Officials in Ramsey County, Minnesota, released video on Tuesday that shows the interaction Castile had with St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez before Castile was shot to death during a traffic stop in July. In the video, Yanez tells Castile that he’s being pulled over because he has a brake light out. (Audio later used as evidence in the case against Yanez ― and also released Tuesday ― shows the officer actually thought Castile and his girlfriend “just look like people that were involved in a robbery.”) “Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me,” Castile says in the graphic video, embedded below. “OK, don’t reach for it then,” Yanez says. “Don’t pull it out.” Castile appears to say that he’s not pulling out the gun, and then Yanez shoots him. Yanez can be heard screaming profanities and sobbing after the shooting. He keeps his gun pointed at a dying Castile as he calls for backup and waits for other officers to arrive.

Later in the video, when Yanez is interviewed by another officer, he admits that he didn’t actually see Castile grab for a gun. He notes, however, that he was nervous after he asked to see Castile’s license, and Castile “had his grip a lot wider than a wallet.” Yanez says: “I didn’t know where the gun was, he didn’t tell me where the fuckin’ gun was, and then it was just gettin’ hanky. He was just staring straight ahead, and I was gettin’ fuckin’ nervous and then … I told him to get his fuckin’ hand off his gun … Fuck.” Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her 4-year-old daughter were in the car at the time. Reynolds live-streamed the aftermath of the shooting, which brought worldwide attention to the case. A jury on Friday found Yanez not guilty on a charge of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm.

Tuesday’s video release quickly drew more attention to the acquittal, which prompted thousands of protesters to March through Saint Paul over the weekend. “It’s just like, a punch in my stomach, it’s a punch in the gut,” Castile’s friend, John Thompson, told HuffPost Tuesday. “Look what happened to Philando for doing all the right things. It hurts. Every time I talk about it, it hurts. “I’m so tired of being tired, I’m so tired of being sad, I’m so tired of being angry at this system.” Yanez was fired from the police force after the acquittal. “The City of St. Anthony has concluded that the public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city,” the city said on its website Friday. “The city intends to offer Officer Yanez a voluntary separation agreement to help him transition to another career other than being a St. Anthony officer.”

  1. I think maybe he should've kept a more level head. I understand the whole screaming down part. But it adds to the angst. It doesn't reduce the angst. It's needed but should be managed better. That is a hyper-stress situation. And angst can cloud ones judgment. I don't think he should've lost his job but he needed training to manage that angst that comes with that screaming. Veteran cops can go from stark raving and screaming to super sweet in the snap of fingers. They can turn it on and off. His reaction afterwards, tells us that Officer Yanez couldn't control his emotions. His angst gripped him, thus losing control. It's a delicate balance but a detrimental one. Takes YEARS to gain control of it. It's pretty much like when waiter are inundated with orders and they start spinning. That loss of control

  2. This piece of shit is still a cop that makes me so mad…and I'm a cop supporter , cops like this need to be taken off the force

  3. That is the reason why police officers in germany have to visit policeschoole for 2.5 years. Every 6 month they have to pass tests and at the end they have to take an exam.

  4. Why tell the officer you have a gun, and then start reaching all around?? This guy was shot justifiably, but unnecessarily due to his actions (perhaps he didn't have enough carry training).

  5. Too trigger happy to be police. All he wanted to do was get his gun out so you wouldn't do exactly what you did. Gave him about half a second to register your new command to not pull it out….. he kept moving his body in some way that determined your decision to execute this man. No judge, no juror, just reckless instinctual behavior. Not fit for police. You need diligence. I understand it is a stressful job but that is obvious. You must hold the balance between restraint and executioner. There is no excuse. You have a gun. You need ultimate diligence.

  6. This happened in Duh Far Left Peoples' Demokratik Republik of Minnesota, ergo, no ray-cismz involved. It must instead be due to Marxist Indoctrination… pity.

  7. Officer Jeronimo Yanez was charged with Manslaughter but acquitted and given a 600-hour ($48500) buyout, effectively a severance package. The mom got a $3million settlement. It didn't sound "I have to pull it out" it sounded more like "I'm not pulling it out" and was instead reaching for the requested ID. He didn't have to volunteer the information about the firearm, and seven shots seemed a bit excessive. It was revealed that he DID NOT pull that gun out after all.

  8. That officer is so unfit to have a gun in his hand…look at his off the wall reaction to what he did. He knew he screwed up. He should have never been given this job.

  9. He said "im not pulling it out". However, man the cop is repeatedly telling you not to and you still try to open glove box. You just cant do that. Not a race thing at all. Just freeze . People can pull a gun so fast.

  10. i can’t tell if he says “ima have to pull it out” or a stuttering “i’m not pulling it out”.

  11. Man I understand 100% why the officer shot but I honestly don't think that guy was goin to try anything because he had a carry concealed license so he apparently never been in trouble before or they would not have gave him the license, but I do see where the cop panicked and shot on instinct!! Just a sad situation it was all unintentional!

  12. does anyone know if there is a bodycam video? Did the guy pull out his gun and aim it at the officer or did he just continue to pull it out even the though the officer told him not to. I wish I could get a better view to have a better opinion on the whole situation

  13. As a veteran of this channel and opponent of BLM I can concede from the evidence available this might not have been a justified shooting. But that would be the exception not the rule. In my opinion, the cops shoot late in the majority of cases and give the perp plenty of opportunity to comply – risking their own lives in doing so. Don’t let one borderline case skew the reality

  14. I dont really blame the police officer. Nor do i think he was racist. Try to put yourself in his shues.

So think about going to talk to the people in the car. And all of a sudden the suspect says they have a firearm on them. And immediatelly going to reach for something.
Ofcourse your instant reaction would be hes reaching for a gun.
And he just shitted himself and opened fire.
You can hear by his voice that he was upset, scared af, shaking etc

  15. The problem here was that Philando told the officer he had a firearm at the same time as he was reaching in his pockets for the license, that was a pretty major mistake. And it seems like he kept searching/reaching even though he was told to "not reach for it", because of course the officers have no clue where the gun is or who the driver is, the know absolutely nothing. There have been many cases in which officers has been fatally shot when confronting a car they pulled over, so I can understand why they're always on their guard and being strict in terms of where your hands are, it's important to follow procedure. But at the same time the officer seemed to be pretty unstable/emotional, and so I'm convinced it was the combination of these two things that made this confrontation fatal.

  16. I'm surprised so many people are attributing this tragedy to Castile's actions. Okay, sure, he was going for his license as he told the officer he had a weapon in the car. Yeah, not a smart thing.

BUT the officer obviously panicked. He was already drawing his gun the moment Castile said he had one. Common sense would lead one to believe that if the driver meant harm to the officer, he'd have just used the gun rather than calmly explaining that he had the gun.

So yes, Castile could have acted smarter and maybe it would have changed the outcome but ultimately the tragedy resulted from the officer panicking and shooting a man unreasonably.

Those of us who support law enforcement need to accept that sometimes the officer is going to act wrongly and be at fault. It's okay to admit it. Nobody is perfect.

  17. After shooting so many shots, how can you rescue her back? Every action after got shots are useless. That police is too nervous, don't know why.

  18. This is a very controversial shooting because of the girlfriend's cell phone footage post shooting. Without having footage of the entire incident from inside the car its very difficult to say whether or not this was justified.

  19. Seven shots ..ok then. sorry buddy that was overdoing it just a tad! especially with a woman and a little Girl in the car! REALLY Bad call!
