Dashcam Video Shows Sheriff’s Deputy Rescuing Toddler Running Down Oregon Highway After a toddler was spotted running down the middle of a dark highway by a sheriff’s deputy who rescued him in Oregon, the Sheriff’s Office released dashcam video of the incident as a way of warning motorists about the dangers distracted driving. Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Gautney was driving on U.S. 101 in the coastal city of Newport on Jan. 9, apparently a rainy evening, when he spotted the 2-year-old running down the middle turn lane toward his patrol car. Gautney quickly stopped his vehicle, got out and scooped up the toddler, the video shows. A big rig passes by in the oncoming lane just seconds later.

The deputy soon learned the child’s parents were frantically searching for the little boy, who had escaped from a nearby community center gathering, according to sheriff’s Lt. Curtis Landers, who narrated the video. The boy was reunited with his parents and the incident was determined to be accidental. No charges were filed. The Sheriff’s Office released the video “not … to ridicule or question those involved” but to warn drivers that they need to pay full attention when driving as they could face unexpected conditions. “We are very thankful for Deputy Gautney’s alertness and quick action that allow for this child’s safe return to his parents,” Landers said.

  1. I don’t care where you are Community Center gathering or not. How do you lose sight of your 2 year old?

  2. I did the same one time. Found a kid in diapers in the middle of a cross intersection at night. Turns out he walked out of his house while the mom was in the shower. Came out crying and didn’t even thank me. Just cried for her kid. True story 💯

  3. That literally gave me goosebumps…especially when the semi truck approached right after the sherriff picked the child up into his arms. Talk about being at the right place at the right time. 🙏

  4. I have a two year old granddaughter… my heart just sank! Can’t even imagine! And thank God that it was an observant officer and not a drunk or distracted driver…. or that semi that passes just seconds later!

  5. Well done Mr Policeman! To people blaming the parents, kids can be slippery – if you are perfect every moment of every day point the finger, otherwise..

  6. That is one very lucky kid. These little ones are so quick to go astray – my youngest brother was the explorer. You'd see him now, the next he's taken off. It was quite a strain keeping tabs on him.

  7. wow, this could have been a disaster. well played officer. as soon as the child is in view lights are on and pulls into middle of the road to slow traffic. the parents on the other hand? well…

  8. Wow, even a scary movie couldn't replicate that shot of the tiny humanoid shape coming into view in grainy black and white. Haunting.

  9. Just don't make him angry and everything will be alright kid… Probably took out his frustrations on the kid's parents… I don't blame him… it would suck to be a pig.. it'd make me wanna hit people too. Its society's fault cops are given such a bad rap it drives them to murderous tendencies… not all cops are on steroids. Not all cops are corrupt either.
