New Mexico State Senator Richard Martinez (D) was responsible for a crash in Española, NM in mid 2019. He crashed into a jeep that was at a red light at a high rate of speed. The Senator failed two sobriety tests and refused a breath test. On December 17th, 2019 he was convicted of aggravated DWI and reckless driving by a bench trial.
Martinez who holds a key legislative committee chairmanship in New Mexico, was convicted today after a day-and-a-half long bench trial in Santa Fe. He will be sentenced Jan. 7 and faces a minimum sentence of seven days in jail under the two counts and a maximum of 180 days.
Martinez, 66, who has served in the Senate since 2001, remained emotionless as District Judge Francis Mathew announced the verdict and did not respond to reporters’ questions while leaving the Santa Fe courthouse.
