Man Gets Shot Twice After Charging at Officers While Holding a Box Cutter

Grand Rapids, Michigan — On December 16, 2023, Grand Rapids Police officers received a call about a man inside a local business who was threatening customers. The individual had locked himself in a bathroom and then possibly attempting to steal something and then he was threatening customers. Not long after, police say they heard a man with the same description who was assaulting people in the area. Around 8:30 a.m., an officer went to Union Avenue NE and Innes Street NE on the city’s northeast side and found the 19-year-old in an alley, telling police he’s armed with a box cutter. Bodycam shows officer telling the the man to keep his hands on his head. The man initially complied but ultimately ran at the officer with a boxcutter in his left hand.

The officer fired three shots. Two of the rounds hit the man in his chest and stomach, which caused him to fall onto the ground. From there, a second officer arrived on scene. As he walked up, the man then got back onto his feet and ran into the garage of a nearby home with two people inside at the time. Officers stand outside the garage and the man yells to them that he has a knife. Eventually, the man leaves the garage and charges at the officers again. The officers attempted to subdue the man with a taser, which did not work. They then fired another shot, shooting the man in the arm. At this point officers were able to secure the man. Medical aid was given to the suspect on scene by GRPD and East Grand Rapids Public Safety officers arriving to the scene. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover.
