Los Angeles, California — On October 31, 2021, around 3:25 p.m., LAPD Van Nuys Division officers responded to a radio call of a vandalism suspect. The suspect later was identified as 46-years-old Melkon Michaelidis. Michaelidis was reported to be possibly suffering from mental illness and breaking windows and property inside his residence. Upon their arrival, the officers attempted to communicate with Michaelidis for approximately 40 minutes from outside his residence and convince him to exit. Michaelidis refused, and after determining no one else was inside the residence, the officers tactically disengaged and cleared the scene.

At around 5:09 p.m., a second radio call was generated when Michaelidis was observed outside his residence armed with two knives and vandalizing parked vehicles. Van Nuys patrol officers ultimately encountered Michaelidis on Victory Boulevard west of Matilija Avenue holding a knife in each hand. The officers verbalized with Michaelidis, who began walking toward them while armed with one of the knives, resulting in an officer-involved shooting and a simultaneous deployment of less-lethal munitions. Michaelidis was struck by gunfire and collapsed to the pavement. He was determined deceased at scene by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel. Two knives were recovered at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.

  1. All of those cars in the background, "Oh look some police activity. Hey they are all pointing guns in our direction. We are directly behind the line of fire. Let's not make a U=turn and get out of Dodge. Let's just stay here in a slow moving line and hope the cops don't shoot…"

  2. Just food for thought. In these situations should the police be more pro-active with the less lethal sooner? Instead of waiting perhaps the police should attack with tasers and the less lethal shotguns. What does everyone else think?

  3. Look how organized the LAPD is! Everybody talking over each other, ordering him to do dozen of different things 🙂

  4. Just repeating what most of the comments have said. Too many cops giving commands at once. That is not how to de-escalate a situation. First on scene should give commands imo. Also, with all the less lethal tools that were at the scene, I just do not understand why lethal was used. This is the second video I've seen that lethal and non-lethal had been used simultaneously. Also, the suspect wanted to be shot by the P.O. as stated when first contact was made. Idk. Why couldn't they use the taser or the beanbag shotgun while he was on his knees to possibly disarm the piece of glass he had in his hand.

  5. Back in my day in the 70-80's i'd be silent and run to him and subdue the suspect with my blackjack.
    Without backup.
Would last 60 seconds or less.

    Policing has become disgusting today.

  6. Was the officer that shot him the one with the shrill voice? She would not shut up and let the calm commanding voiced female work the situation. L.A. really needs to work on their skills of shutting up and letting one do the talking. It's not about you, it's not about you having to show assertiveness. It's about the job and the ppl.

  7. "Michaelidis refused, and after determining no one else was inside the residence, the officers tactically disengaged and cleared the scene." they left him alone after that and that's why he was destroying vehicles… he could have attack and or kill someone !!! what the hell !!

  8. One less crazy person off our streets. If he was arrested he would have been released the next day most likely and may hurt or kill someone. CA needs to vote Rebublicans to run the state if this is going to change.

  9. when firing a less lethal shotgun.. for the love of god please actually call out less lethal. I've seen so many videos where less lethal is fired, but because it just sounds like a normal gunshot, everyone opens fire at the same time because nobody CALLED OUT LESS LETHAL.

I support police but god damn get your training on less lethal in check.

  10. I think they should try to shoot him before he approaches them That woman had a shotgun she could have shot him in the leg at any point before he approached them maybe he could have lived just saying I know it's not possible all the time but maybe cops should shoot preemptively

  11. One thing that baffles me is in such long drawn encounters, where the suspect is already in multiple crosshairs, why
don't they aim for less vital organs like legs. Are they always there to end derranged people's lives?
