Los Angeles, California — On September 17, 2022, 19-year-old Luis Herrera, called 911 twice requesting police be sent to his house and complaining that his father was allegedly drunk and beating his mother. Body camera footage shows two police officers arriving at the Los Angeles home at approximately 1:20pm. As the officers approached the residence, Herrera came out the front door holding what appeared to be a black rifle. The officers gave Herrera commands to drop the rifle, however, Herrera did not comply.

Herrera shouldered the rifle and pointed it at the officers, resulting in an OIS. Herrera was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived and pronounced Herrera deceased. No officers or bystanders were injured during this incident. It was later determined the rifle Herrera was holding during the OIS was an airsoft rifle that shoots plastic projectiles. In addition to the airsoft rifle that Herrera was brandishing, officers also recovered an airsoft pistol at the scene of the officer involved shooting.

Following the incident, investigators said that there was no domestic violence between the 19-year-old’s mother and father, contrary to what Herrera had reported during the initial 911 reports.

  1. Per the description, there was no actual DV. So it would almost have to be a suicide by cop. Given how many police officers die during DV calls, it always amazes me that they still just walk up to the front door. Their quick reactions could easily have saved their lives, had this not been a suicide-by-cop situation.

  2. Poor woman. Kid was an idiot and I don't blame the cops, but hearing her cries made me tear up a bit.

  3. Damn that escalated quickly!! What was going through that kids mind?! You gotta feel for the cops walking in on something like this.

  4. These comments are so insensitive it’s annoying. 19 year old kid just committed suicide on camera and people are commenting “taking out the trash”. Grow up guys.

  5. Classic suicide by cop, unfortunately these officers were put in a terrible position, feel bad for all involved here.

  6. Bad cop, he doesnt analyse he just camp a young dude diying… its like they dont know how the body works.. just cant move with 7 bullets in your body …
