Jack In The Schizophrenic Box, Part I

This video provides a rare firsthand view of an interaction between law enforcement officers, paramedics, and a young man in the throes of a mental health crisis. Part II will be published tomorrow at noon EST.

Although I typically do not post videos like this out of respect for the privacy of people who are victims of unfortunate circumstances rather than their own bad decisions, I will briefly explain my reasons for this apparent departure from policy:

First, broadly, this incident highlights the dire need for police officers to receive effective training in the recognition and handling of individuals experiencing mental health crises, and in differentiating those individuals from run-of-the-mill uncooperative subjects. That training exists and it is effective.

Just as importantly, it is a reminder that such skills are useless if they are not put into practice when needed.

Second, more specifically:

1. The subject in this video is Kyle North. Mr. North recently filed a lawsuit against the Pullman Police Department over this 2016 encounter, claiming over $1 million in damages and citing violations of his civil rights, negligence, disability discrimination, assault and battery.

2. North’s complaint made serious allegations regarding officer training and qualification. In particular, it alleged that the officer who repeatedly tased Mr. North was forbidden under Department policy from even carrying a taser, and that the officer who employed a choke-hold (aka “lateral vascular neck restraint”) on Mr. North was similarly not authorized to use that technique.

3. . The lawsuit describes all of the events in this video in great detail, adding a lot of information that a viewer could not know solely from the video. It also explains Mr. North’s mental health status at the time of the incident, pulling no punches. The cat is well out of the bag.

4. North’s lawsuit settled this week; the City of Pullman didn’t even make a show of trying to defend its officers’ actions.

The complaint can be found at http://tiny.cc/northcomplaint.

The complaint is long, and it’s worth a read. (Incredibly, it seems that the officer actually did break North’s arm in this encounter.)

The City of Pullman’s answer to the complaint can be found at http://tiny.cc/citysanswer.

  1. I feel so sry for this boy . They handled that wrong ! The manager needs to get his ass bk in there and take some orders he knows damn well he didn’t have to wry bout getting the car out right then .

  2. Wow he manipulated those cops into giving him the attention he craves . In his world everything revolves around him and his feelings , I`ve seen this many times in my life time . Best thing to do is ignore him and carry on with your day .

  3. Just knock it off these police officers need to know how to treat mental people. It’s clearly they don’t.

  4. Hard to watch the cops mess up SO bad. They all need special training to handle situations like this.

  5. I’m absolutely disgusted by these officers!! This is why soo many ppl don’t reach out for help!! My heart goes out to this poor boy as he clearly tells them that he needs help & is treated like a drug addict. Very difficult to watch

  6. As soon as the grey haired piece of shit pinned him on the ground, I had to turn the video off. I am literally shaking with anger right now. This is beyond despicable. Those officers deserved to be fired and barred from EVER holding any sort of law enforcement job again. Absolutely inexcusable and unforgivable.

  7. "Jack In The Schizophrenic Box"? Nice. Very classy.

You make fun of mentally ill people, I unsubscribe from your Patreon. 👋

  8. Were the officers ever informed that mr north was a schizophrenic? I’m asking because if they were never told then how would they know he was having a crisis? And if people want officers to receive mental illness recognition training are people prepared to allow the polices funding to be increased dramatically across every state so this sort of doesn’t happen again?

  9. That's sad. They suffer from paranoia and are delusional at times. Some people should be more understanding, patient, and compassionate.
He probably stopped taking his medication and was just having an episode as a result of that.
There's a difference between being on drugs and having a disability that he has no control over.

  10. The real shame is these folks don't need jail that's not the answer these folks have mental impairment because most nobody can pull this good of an act of without it he can't simply cut it out his mind is playing tricks on what's happening that's real fear in his voice on don't let them take me comment and him attempting to calm himself back down later on more charges don't help these people

  11. All they had to do was have some sympathy and stop threatening him. Speak to him like a human. Tell him he’s okay. He’s so confused and terrified

  12. I’m heartbroken for this kid. I’m so sorry the system failed to help you through this.

  13. Why is everyone just standing there while he is held down on the floor still not being helped or attended to or even spoken to. They aren't answering his questions. No wonder he felt unsafe.

  14. And so the jack ass cop really did break his arm. He might have been in the middle of some type of mental break, but he could still see and feel the evil off those 1st 2 'men'

  15. I guarantee that everyone here ripping on the cops would call those same cops to take care of this lunatic if he showed up at their place of business or home.
There's too much drugs and too much crazy out there for any "de-escalation techniques."
    Sad, but true.

  16. I just wonder what his parents think about this horrific incident of the son asking for them several times after he told the officers he felt strange.
