Indianapolis, Indiana — On Wednesday, March 29, 2023 just after 4:00 p.m., IMPD Northwest District officers were dispatched to the 5600 block of Georgetown Road on a report of a carjacking. Officers were advised that a vehicle crash had occurred at 5600 Georgetown Road and an occupant from the crashed vehicle carjacked a black Chevy Impala at the intersection. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Michael Barnes drove away in the Impala. Within minutes, officers located the Impala near W. 62nd Street and Cooper Road. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle with their lights and sirens on; however, Barnes did not stop. A vehicle pursuit ensued and ended at the on-ramp to Interstate-65 South from Kessler Blvd N. Drive, where Barnes quickly emerged from the vehicle, facing officers with a firearm in his hand.

Two officers (Officer David Yohe and Officer Donovan Hankins) discharged their firearms, striking Barnes. No officers or uninvolved citizens were injured during this incident. Officers safely approached and provided medical aid to Barnes until medics arrived. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) arrived and transported Barnes to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Shortly after his arrival to the hospital, Barnes’s condition was upgraded to stable. Detectives located a handgun near Barnes. Barnes was placed under arrest for a violation of probation warrant out of Grant County. This violation was from a 2018 case under cause number 27C-1808-F2-000025 where he was convicted of the following charges: Unlawful possession of a firearm by Serious Violent Felon, Possession of a Narcotic Drug Possession X2, Possession of Methamphetamine, Theft and Possession of Marijuana.

  1. Cops shooting while cars are driving past is not smart in my book. Stop traffic before you go CLINT Eastwood!

  2. No one else noticed that the cop did not care what the backdrop was. He was shooting with cars going past the line of fire. Luckily, no one else was killed or injured. If any civilian where to do that, we would be charged with reckless endangerment.

  3. What a horrible situation. So much traffic/crossfire behind the threat that needs to be ended. Also that's like 50+ feet. For anybody who has never fired a handgun, that's a TOUGH shot, especially with everything else going on. Thank god nobody other that the POS was injured.
