Homicide in Albuquerque: Inside the Mobile Crime Lab

On October 29, 2017 Steve Kramer, 42 years old at the time, was arrested and charged with the murder of Vincent Guttierez in the campaign office of former mayoral candidate Dinah Vargas.

According to the criminal complaint the murder was witnessed by Vargas, and those who knew Kramer report that the murder was preceded by a precipitous slide into mental illness and methamphetamine abuse by Kramer, who had just a few years prior co-founded a media organization with the hope of helping the homeless – people like Vincent Guttierez, Kramer’s victim.

Friends reported that Kramer’s troubles began when he disappeared for a long period of time, only to return and report that he – a highly educated architect – was homeless and abusing hard drugs. That was followed by months of bizarre behavior, which included stripping naked outside and paranoid belief that the police department was bugging his person.

Eventually, it seemed, Kramer only trusted Vargas, and he and would occasionally be seen at her campaign headquarters. Vargas told police that she had been at her Albuquerque office at Central and Rio Grande earlier the day of the murder to pack it up, but she realized she left some belongings behind and returned around 10:30 p.m.

Kramer is reported to have arrived at the office at the same time. Vargas told police his behavior was strange and he kept making grunting noises along with talking to himself angrily in the bathroom.

While at the office, Gutierrez arrived and Vargas let him in. Guttierez had been living with his girlfriend in a trailer in the parking lot, where they had received permission to park. Vargas is reported to have said that because the office was closing, some of the furniture was going to Gutierrez.

Vargas told police that everyone sat down at a table to talk, and that Kramer was still making “grunting” noises. As she stood up to end the conversation and leave, she said she heard a popping noise. Kramer then turned to Vargas and asked “Was I not supposed to do that?” while holding a literally smoking gun.

Vargas says that she screamed and said they needed to call the police and Kramer replied, “We need to go out the back door, I don’t want to have to kill you.”

According to the complaint, Vargas told police that she fled the office building and called the police.

On August 24, 2018 this channel posted exclusive body camera footage from the first officer that responded to the scene.

Now (for what may be the first time ever) you are invited to step inside Albuquerque Police Department’s mobile crime scene laboratory, to observe the first steps in the forensic processing of the murder scene as specialists methodically gather evidence from Kramer’s clothing.

  1. Meth is a real destroyer!, I notice he had all his finger nails painted a pretty light purple color, they will appreciate that touch where he is going!. And it is really sad how life is held in such low regard by some people.

  2. All I can say is that seeing the luminol blood indicator all over his nails is creepy AF. Whats even creepier, Steven seems like nothing even happened. And the court lets people like this back out into society after 10-15 years, green mile his unstable ass.

  3. The moans, gasps, and other odd mutterings from the killer is what happens when you go on one hell of a meth bender.

  4. Why on earth did he kill someone else?? Answer = meth and drugs!! In his actions he has ruined his own life and the lives of the family and friends of the person he murdered!!

  5. Thanks for the look.we don't normally see this process unless u r the suspect.I'm sure I heard him say that he had writing on his legs.that's bizarre.

  6. Meth is one of the most destructive drug on earth. I have witnessed so many great people; from football players, to seamstresses, and business owners; decline so quickly and become straight up criminals. I wish Meth, and of course all other habit forming substances could be destroyed with the snap of a finger. Makes me so sick to see people like Steven Kramer, who was possibly a successful Architect, who had a beautiful family and home/life go down hill and commit this heinous crime; of killing another man. I pray every day that law officials will one day end this criminal war on drugs and win the battle. Hence, save lives that have been broken as a result of drug addiction. Steven will probably spend the rest of his life behind bars (I haven't heard what his prison sentence is), and will be served up pharmaceutical/addictive, legal drugs for his mental disability that 'possibly' came on as a result of pushing drugs in to his blood stream. One more Tax Payers burden. SMH! By the way, the Police and Homicide Investigative team did a fantastic job. Take Care, Always Be Safe and God Bless You, for the dangerous/hard work you do.

  7. Damn bro can hear his grunting and shit he was apparently doing at the time of the shooting that shit is creepy!!! Nice job on videos

  8. It is a real skill being able to be so friendly to someone who just murdered someone
To not let emotion take over
I’d imagine they’d have to disassociate themselves

  9. that is why I wouldnt make a very good cop ,cause I couldn't arrest guys like him ,I would end up in prison for murder ,if I tried to b a cop ,b even worse trying to arrest a child molester, i couldn't do it ,I'd just put a bullet between his eyes ,fuck it ,guess i better stick to being a trucker lol

  10. I’m soo sick of ppl labelling ppl & blaming it on them being homeless or on drugs. You have some of the nicest ppl in all situations that would neva harm anyone on drugs but sadly themselves. Pls stop putting ppl into boxes! There’s good & bad in all walks of life. Sometimes you can find the most evil person in a church & the most purest caring, loving person on drugs! It’s the individual not anything else!

  11. So sad 😞😪 such horrible ppl that exist in the world! It’s not the drugs there’s no excuse & nothing to blame but the individuals that do such heinous stuff Cos they’re evil, sociopaths n psychopaths! I just came to this after watching how they found n arrested him, I then clicked on the subscribers videos.

  12. This dude is an architect and had wealthy and successful life till he found meth. Dude ruined his career and life over the meth.
Watch the arrest video and read up on him. It's a shame!

  13. Thank you for the upload. Interesting look at how it’s done.
One aside about the suspect. I don’t hear him grunting or acting strange. (So far)

  14. That cops bumpin Ol Dirty Bastard "ODB" singing " I said Hey, hey hey, baby I got your killer, don't ya worry!" 🤣🤣

  15. I was wondering why the office was so small and cramped and then they walked out of the truck and it was like "ooohhhh, thats why."
