Driver fined after being caught reading a novel on his Kindle behind the wheel of car.
Sometimes a book is just too good to put down… and that’s perhaps the only defense for one driver after he was pulled over on Highway 149 in Eagan for reading a novel. Seems funny at first, but it’s actually pretty dangerous.

Dash cam video shows the officer asking the driver what he was looking at — “I was reading,” the driver responded. “What were you reading?” the officer asked. “A James Patterson book,” he replied.

In this case, the plot twist came not from James Patterson, but from the writings of a citation.

“The nicest guy, obviously not the smartest thing to do while driving. Very dangerous. But he kind of got it, knew he made a mistake and the officer went back and ended up giving him a citation,” Officer Aaron Machtemes, spokesperson for Eagan Police, said.

He said especially during the day there are a lot of accidents caused by people texting or doing other things on their iPhone – “and they look down for two seconds, that’s when the person ahead of them hits the brakes and there’s an accident.”

“Just recently, as of today, I heard of a lady with big curls in her hair and as she’s driving she’s taking her curls out with her knees up on the wheel,” Machtemes said.

Machtemes said distracted driving is only getting worse — mostly because of smart phones. A suggestion the officer had to avoid temptation is to put your phone on vibrate and in the glove box. “Stay alive, don’t novel and drive,” Machtemes said.

  1. Are novels really worth dying for and potentially killing somebody with your negligence. Really how arrogant can oneself be.

  2. Good officer. I have seen this a whole bunch 20 to 30 years ago. Now everyone is texting or not using hands free cell phones. I have had 5 people hit me while standing still at stop lights because they were using cell phones.

  3. actually I used to do somethings like talking on mobile (not the loud speaker), drinking coffee , chatting on laptop or even browsing the web in the same time

  4. it's a kindle.. you know they have audio books too.
why does this guy get a citation? douchebag drivers should get jail time

  5. Huh, I thought he was reading on how to get into an accident or to crash his car in order to help with his car insurance.
No but seriously, people. Don’t read or text while driving. It’ll kill ya, think it out.

  6. Plot twist: The guy was actually drunk but clever enough to pretend that he was reading a book instead… 😀

  7. No comments? Anyone out there guilty of texting and driving? I'll tell ya if anyone ever does that and hits me and doesn't kill me and I can walk, ya best expect me to get out of my car and beat the wholly shit out of you and make you regret living. Peace
