The Clark County Sheriff’s Office has released multiple body camera recordings of a fatal deputy-involved shooting that occurred on February 20th, 2024.

The incident began when a woman dialed 911 just after midnight to express concerns about her mother’s safety. She reported that her mother was at the residence of a male family member in Bush Prairie. The daughter stated that her mother was calling from the male family member’s phone, her behavior was strange, and she was making statements that, didn’t sound like herself.

As deputies were en route to the location, they came across an unrelated incident involving a severely intoxicated driver, requiring immediate attention.

While dealing with the intoxicated driver, the daughter called 911 again, reporting that her mother had contacted her, claiming she was being held hostage and that there were “guns everywhere” before abruptly hanging up. This prompted additional deputies to respond to the residence.

Upon arrival at 1:17 A.M., deputies approached the property where the suspect lived in an RV. They encountered both the suspect and the victim standing outside the RV.

As they approach the residence, Deputies make phone contact with the suspect.

Deputy one asks the victim, is everything ok… what happened?

The victim tells Deputy one that she wants to go home and the suspect is armed.
Deputy one asks, “is it on him currently?”

Deputy one tells Sergeant, she’s acting really weird and she says he has a gun on him.
Deputy one then asks the victim, did a crime occur?
She answers yes.
Deputy one asks the victim, what happened?
She responds that the suspect has been acting strange lately.
Deputy one asks the victim, what crime occurred?

The victim describes being sexually assaulted by the suspect.

During the encounter, three deputies discharged their firearms, with two deputies witnessing the incident.

After gaining control of the scene, deputies immediately administered first aid to the suspect, including the application of chest seals, an automated external defibrillator, and CPR until medical personnel arrived. Police said, it is a policy of the state of Washington that all law enforcement personnel provide or facilitate first aid such that it is rendered at earliest safe opportunity to injured persons at a scene controlled by law enforcement. The suspect later identified as 53-year-old Jonathan Gale was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the victim was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Following standard protocol, five Clark County Sheriff’s deputies involved in the incident have been placed on Critical Incident Leave.

The Southwest Washington Independent Investigation Team, led by the Vancouver Police Department, is overseeing the investigation into the shooting. Additionally, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for investigating the sexual assault allegations.
In compliance with the will not be involved in the investigation of the Officer Involved Shooting.

Subsequent to the incident, Major Crimes Detectives executed a search warrant inside the suspect’s RV. Detectives discovered and seized ten suspected improvised Explosive Devices, multiple firearms, and over one thousand rounds of ammunition. The investigation into these findings is ongoing.
