Police said, on January 26th deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of 1508 South Piedmont Highway after Greenville County communications received two 911 calls at around 10:52 p.m. regarding an assault. Shortly after 11 p.m. deputies arrived on scene and during their investigation they learned the suspect of that assault identified as 38-year-old Larry Doyle Simmons allegedly struck the victim with an object before fleeing the scene on foot. Deputies initiated a search for Simmons in and around the area at around 11:15 p.m. deputies encountered an armed man they believed to be the suspect. Deputies encountered an armed man they believed to be the suspect concealing himself behind a pickup truck, after identifying themselves multiple times as the Sheriff’s Office, the subject fired at 12 gauge shotgun at deputies before one Deputy returned fire striking the subject. Deputies maintained cover until a K9 arrived on scene to safely separate the subject from the firearm that he was possessing. Here is an aerial infrared Drone footage showing the deputy’s approach to the subject next to his firearm. After deeming the scene safe Sheriff’s Office Medics moved in to attempt first aid, however it was discovered the subject identified as 51-year-old Robert Lee Campbell was deceased. According to the Greenville County Coroner he died from multiple gunshot wounds. No one else were injured. While deputies were on scene they located and apprehended the original suspect Simmons who had been hiding in a lot next to the shooting scene. Police said at the time of this release it has not been determined why Campbell fired at deputies however it is clear he took no part in the initial assault. According to an arrest warrant, the victim of the assault and a witness to the incident both provided statements stating that Simmons opened the door to the victim’s vehicle and struck them with a board. Greenville County deputies charged 38-year-old Larry Doyle Simmons with third degree assault and battery.
Agents from the South Carolina law enforcement division conducted an investigation into the officer involved shooting, the firearm possessed by Campbell and used to shoot at deputies was discovered to be a loaded 12 gauge pump shotgun that was collected by SLED agents and seized as evidence. Further investigation revealed Campbell was prohibited from possessing or acquiring Firearms or ammunition pursuant to the federal gun control act.

It is unclear what the relation was between Simmons and the man he allegedly struck with the board but it is alleged to be a dispute between a towing company operator and another man.
