Dashcam Shows Fargo Officer Shooting Man Armed With BB Gun

In the early hours of Sept. 28, a man in a parking lot was pointing a BB gun at a Fargo police officer. Yelling at the top of his lungs, the officer repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon, to no avail. The encounter ended with the officer, Patrick Thomas, shooting the man with the BB pistol, 31-year-old Karmen Redshirt. Authorities said the pistol had a laser light and looked like a real handgun.

The camera system in Thomas’ squad car captured the video that shows the officer pulling into the parking lot of the Pizza Hut at 4701 13th Ave. S., near the Fargo Wal-Mart. Thomas steps out of the car and right away starts shouting at Redshirt, telling him he’ll be fired upon if he doesn’t drop the gun. The video shows that Thomas spent close to 40 seconds trying to convince Redshirt to drop the gun. Ultimately, Thomas fired three shots. One round hit Redshirt in the abdomen, causing a wound that required surgery and months of recovery.

Cass County State’s Attorney Birch Burdick reviewed an investigation of the shooting done by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and he declined to file criminal charges against Thomas. The Fargo Police Department’s internal review of the shooting found that Thomas’ use of force was justified. Redshirt’s brother, Cody Redshirt, has questioned Thomas’ decision to shoot his brother and to fire three rounds.

The shooting came after Redshirt led police on a chase in a stolen car. Redshirt’s blood-alcohol level that morning was 0.279 percent, authorities said. The legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent. Redshirt, of Bismarck, pleaded guilty to felony charges of theft, reckless endangerment and two counts of terrorizing, as well as a misdemeanor charge of refusing to halt. Redshirt was sentenced last month to four years in prison and three years of supervised probation. He’s being held at the North Dakota State Penitentiary.

  1. I was on a ride along with officer Thomas a couple years before that incident. I had a lot of respect for him then and even more after seeing how many opportunities he gave this suspect to back down before defending himself

  2. I hate pieces of shit like him that want to die but don’t have the balls to do it so they try and make someone else do it for them and have them live with the guilt what they did.

  3. I too question three shots……. I would had fired at least six times….

The officer went out of his way to end this peacefully and as Jimmy said below, should be commended. Nice work!

  4. Wait, his last name was Redshirt…but he wasn't killed off within the first 2 minutes of this production. Why didn't he just follow the script? Damn extras.

  5. I think the cop took an unnecessary risk on his own life not knowing it was a BB gun. If real, at any point the guy could have shot to induce return fire and achieve his desire of suicide by cop.

  6. Wait… wait… wait… his name was "Redshirt" You've got to be kidding me, right? I think that man was destined to die on an away mission. I'm just sorry that it had to happen to that officer.

  7. I hate to be an echo, but jeeze. This cop gave that guy EVERY chance even AFTER the gun had the gun pointed at the cop! That's wild, props to the officer!

  8. Cowardly suicide by cop idiots selfishly ruin other lives by making them end theirs. No tears from me on behalf the filthy coward, but I truly hope the officer isn't horribly effected by this circumstance caused, entirely, by a weak-minded coward.
