#officerinvolvedshooting La Crosse, Wisconsin —- Dashcam video of the fatal officer-involved shooting last month in La Crosse is released as the district attorney clears the officers of any wrongdoing.

The Department of Justice released the videos Friday, the same day the district attorney announced the officers, Stephen Hughes and Andrew Adey, acted in reasonable self-defense.

As a result, neither officer will be charged with any criminal offenses in connection with the incident.
On Sunday, August 13 at 5:01 pm the La Crosse Police were dispatched to Houska Park (1013 Houska Dr.) for a report of a carjacking. The female victim reported that a male white approached her, displayed a handgun and stole her vehicle. The victim was able to get herself and her 3 year old child out of the vehicle prior to it being stolen; however, her 1 year old daughter was still in her car seat.

The responding officers located the stolen vehicle being driven at 10th and Green Bay St. Officers followed the suspect to South Ave and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to stop and turned north onto 7th St. The suspect led officers on a short pursuit with speeds up to 47 mph. The pursuit proceeded east on Adams St. and then north on 8th St., proceeding through barricades for a section of road construction where the road pavement is totally removed. Ultimately the chase ended with the suspect crashing into a parked vehicle near 8th and Johnson St. Officers gave orders to the suspect but he was refusing to obey officers’ commands. As the officers approached the vehicle, they observed that the suspect was in possession of a weapon. Officers continued to give commands and ultimately fired their weapons at the suspect. Additional details about the shooting, the officers’ actions and decision to fire their weapons will be contained in the Wisconsin’s Division of Criminal Investigations report.

Officer Stephen Hughes and Officer Andrew Adey were the two La Crosse Police Officers who fired their weapons. Officer Stephen Hughes has worked for the La Crosse Police Department since October of 2013 and had 4 years of law enforcement experience prior to being hired with La Crosse. Officer Andrew Adey has worked for the La Crosse Police Department since June of 2012 and was with the Army National Guard for 8 years.

The suspect in this incident was identified as Roger Burzinski 06/08/1963 of Green Bay WI. Burzinski’s actions on August 13th are consistent with his lengthy criminal record which stretches back to 1980. Burzinski had convictions for theft of motor vehicle, armed robbery, 2nd degree sexual assault of a child, knowingly fleeing an officer and resisting arrest.
The gun that Burzinski was holding was later determined to be a pellet or BB gun.

An autopsy showed Burzinski had four gunshot wounds to the torso resulting in his death.

The District Attorney’s Office concludes both officers were reasonable in their belief that they were in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.

The investigation was completed by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation.

  1. I was car jacked in Cincinnati. I had to fight the guy who was driving my car and he kept yelling that he was going to stick me. I got on top of him and fought for my life and was able to shove him out in the middle of an intersection.

Someone needs to invent an automatic cutoff for the sirens, maybe a sensor timed for a number of seconds after the officer exits, how they are communicating with that blaring in the background is beyond me, not to mention what the siren does to the psychology of the suspect, not exactly a deescalation when the person is stopped but the sirens keep going and more and more keep coming….

  32. Wisconsin: where the guy said in 2017 that this government enslaves people with using the police. It is enslaving people here. Then a car pile up was there also about a month ago in a snow storm in someplace called Nenah, i think. A sick so called country, including that place Wisconsin. Horrible places here with horrible things made up out of thin air such as group shootings of losers. Victory this is not: shooting losers n riff raff for the devils delight. Still not god even now that someones a loser and all by themselves. Cowards, punks, low lifes supposing to be heroes: The police are the devil. Hated and still occurring to be standing tall.
