Washington, D.C. — on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, in the 1700 block of Minnesota Avenue, Southeast. At approximately 5:48 pm, uniformed patrol officers from the Sixth District were alerted to a male subject using narcotics by an uninvolved citizen. The male was identified as 40 year-old Ras Haile Menelik Salaam was located in an alley, in the rear of the 1900 block of 16th Street, Southeast. When an officer made contact with the male subject he instructed the subject to walk away from the location, and walked to the 1700 block of Minnesota Avenue, Southeast. As he walked away, the member noticed a firearm protruding from his clothing.

The officer requested additional units before stopping the subject. Once additional units arrived in the 1700 block of Minnesota Avenue, Southeast, officers attempted to stop the subject. The subject produced a handgun and discharged it toward the officer. In response, the officer discharged their firearm, striking the male subject. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the subject to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. On Tuesday, August 24, 2021, he was arrested and charged with Assault on a Police Officer While Armed (Gun).

  8. No disrespect to the officer handled this really well. But I seriously thought the officer was female. But no one wants to have to use their firearm to ever take a life no matter what some may think.

  18. I appreciate this guy. Thank you for your service. He’s making the world a safer place at the cost of his own mental health. I hope he is well. Panic attacks suck. They’re so so bad and I hope he’s able to recover and be healthy.

  19. Oh yeah, panic attacks are no joke, but I can’t imagine how scary a situation like that would have been. The mental health of our officers is incredibly important and rarely talked about.

  20. I don't care what anyone says….our Officers are just Human in those uniforms…they feel fear…for their own safety and fear for the safety of others…they feel regret and guilt….and I for one Support them …cause they are just People…like me.

  24. Is it just me, or whenever I watch videos of lapd shootings or nypd shootings, the officers never have a meltdown or sound scared but when i watch videos of police shootings from smaller and less popular cities, the cops have way more of a terrified reaction.

    Pre amble: Since I’ve never been in the military nor a police officer, I will just make the assumption I’d fall apart much worse than this. I’ll say that just because the following is not a criticism of this brave officer who used training and only after the event did he have issues….

    Is it common to see some soldiers just brake down once combat begins? Or is the vetting process past that point, making it rare? For the lack of a better term, and without belittling anyone with an uncontrollable and obviously unwanted “over” reaction…. is it common for some first-time soldiers to freeze and panic, especially during combat?

    Thanks for getting this far. If you did, you remember the name of the town, don’t you? But really, I appreciate anyone’s time who answers.

  35. I don’t know if it really counts as a “panic attack” if it’s triggered by a very real danger like being shot at… a panic attack is basically when you have an adrenaline rush for no obvious reason. It doesn’t take a mental illness to freak out when someone is shooting at you!
