Brentwood, California — On March 12, 2023 at around 9:00 p.m., Brentwood Officers were investigating an unrelated incident in the area of Brentwood Blvd. and Sycamore Ave. when they were approached by an individual reporting a possible hostage situation at the Brentwood Garden Apartments, located in the 160 block of Sycamore Ave. This individual reported an adult female victim was being held against her will by a known male suspect armed with a handgun. The suspect was identified as, 30-year-old Joshua Smith, from Long Beach. Several officers responded to the apartment complex and heard gunshots. As officers approached the suspect and victim situated in a breezeway between several apartments, the suspect fired multiple shots in the direction of the officers.
One officer returned fire striking Smith. Both the suspect and victim were transported to area hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained as a result of the shooting, both are expected to survive. No officers or innocent bystanders were injured during the shooting, however, the suspects errant rounds struck unoccupied vehicles in the parking lot. A loaded firearm and expended shell casings were recovered from the scene. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office filed several felony charges on Joshua Smith, including three counts of attempted murder on a peace officer, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, felony assault and battery, and other firearm related charges with enhancements. Smith remains in custody without bail.

"Both the suspect and victim were transported to area hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained as a result of the shooting, both are expected to survive." I know this is the protocol but this suspect should be dead by shooting. Doctors have bunch of patients to care about. Please do not let them help POS like this suspect… so sad.
I love the way like sares talk to the woman, great officer!
That poor woman! I'm glad this officer was the one to save her. He was compassionate and kind.
They just burst in and shoot. Lucky she didn't get shot in the torso. I've seen another video where the police shoot the hostage aswell. They will rather shoot a hostage than compromising their own safety.
California cops are on a different level, W
See how easy it is for the man at 3:03 to do as he is told and he is not shot.
полиции вообще плевать на заложников!
That's the most frustrating dispatcher I ever heard and that's saying something
Spoilers in the video are so meh, wish they hadn't included the countdown to key events, as I like to think my way through a situation as it presents itself.
Guy was just having a mental episode. Clearly the city should have sent a mental health expert…. 🤡
was it a clean one shot?
USA should ban all guns. Don't let the gun looby exploit your nationalist feelings.
What happened to the lady they just cut the video there 😭
Sentva bullet and shrapnel, what a lie
Incredibly fragile situation to be called out to, great work by the officers involved and the victim wasn't harmed. Unfortunately that pos Smith is expected to survive -_-
Rare that it is handled this well! Good on them.
Why American police shooting people every hour? Extremely dangerous country
"Kinda holding my mom hostage" What the fuck people 😀
My apartment was a couple feet away from were it happend I herd the shots and everything thank you BPD for serving and protecting like how real policing should be
Top notch police response there …
I thought he struck the hostage since she quit screaming immediately after he shot and seen her laying there. I bet that cop had a moment of pure dread in that moment. And then the daughter hears a gunshot in the distance, probably thinking that her mom was shot.
These dispatchers kind of suck 😂 I know they’re doing their best, it’s always a trip to hear how they talk though
Very professional officers. Another fine job.
"KINDA holding my mom hostage with a gun" – we're doomed as a society.
That was a fucking shot holy crap.
And why is this person free with all those priors ???? FJB
Sad that MF is still alive
Shi sad I wish the safety of the citizens and the police
this looks exactly like that place where they had a hostage situation with two homeless guys and a knife
All the officers did an amazing job pushing the fight to end the hostage situation after it had gone south. It is unfortunate that the POS is going to live.
What a lovely good man saying sweetheart you gonna be OK xx
I thought this was the same building where the other homeless guy was holding a homeless hostage with a knife.
Imagine cop knocking on your door again asking to use your apartment to shoot the suspect.
Awesome Job Gentlemen!
