A man who brandished and fired a handgun while walking near the Northern Arizona University campus was killed by police Monday in a shootout after he tried to carjack a vehicle in a busy intersection, authorities said. The shooting of Verl Bedonie, 26, of Tuba City, happened during the morning commute in a residential area a few blocks from downtown Flagstaff. No one other than Bedonie was hurt, said police Sgt. Margaret Bentzen. She said Bedonie repeatedly ignored commands to drop his weapon. At one point, he held a motorist at gunpoint, demanding that he be driven to Phoenix, Bentzen said.

An undercover officer in an unmarked vehicle put a stop to the plan by ramming the car. Once out of the vehicle, Bedonie raised the gun toward officers and fired a single shot, Bentzen said. Flagstaff police Sgt. Collin Seay and NAU police Officer Dillon Jenkins returned fire, killing Bedonie. “The officers took the measures they needed to,” Bentzen said. Seay and Jenkins have been placed on standard, administrative leave and are receiving support from within their departments to cope with the shooting, Bentzen said. Police did not specify how many shots were fired from the officers’ weapons or where Bedonie was hit.

A bullet from one officer’s gun went through the wall of a home behind Bedonie, hitting a dog inside. Bentzen said the dog is expected to recovery after surgery. Two other officers from the Flagstaff Police Department earlier fired a handful of shots at Bedonie while he was walking through the parking lot of a hotel on the NAU campus and pointed his gun at police, but none hit Bedonie. The incident unfolded when officers responded to a report of an armed man inside a conference center on the NAU campus confronting a man nearby, police said in a statement.

  1. Marksmanship matters. There's no excuse for piss poor marksmanship. Taking action when it needs to be taken matters. That can be blamed on the absurdly unrealistic accountability of this current Cancel Culture that has unrealistic standards for police and is actually anti-police when they can do no right.

  2. What I want to know is, WHO IS THE MORON WALKING AROUND THE CRANE while a cop and an armed suspect are flanking him shooting at each other?

  3. I just realised there are a lot of fucked up people in the world. I mean how would you ever pull out a gun on fully armed P Os is beyond me. Either the mentally ill number has skyrocketed or their care has subsided. Thank GOD we have the POLICE 👮‍♀️ 👮🏾‍♀️👮🏻‍♀️🙏

  4. Look at 1:00 all the other people around, major construction and he didn't want to hit anyone else. It's not the Ferguson effect, it's too many bodies moving around.

  5. How many times do they have to suggest he drops the gun before they decide to drop the guy. What the hell?

  6. You gave him ample warning, he’s fired shots and not complying. There comes a time when letting this incident continue jeopardizes public safety. You have a clear shot, take it

  7. So many people here trying to play victim "Oh woe is me! Can't shoot cus people might call me racist! I'd rather die!" BS

It's collateral damage. Those cops are holding their fire to protect the civvies they are hired to protect.

  8. Loving reading all these comments saying the police should have shot him sooner, if you read the description you'll realise that it was the police that were shooting not the suspect during the first gunfire when the suspect pulled out the gun in the parking lot, they just missed all their shots. I agree they should have killed the guy sooner but they were just awful shots
